Please read the class descriptions carefully. Most of the classes are offered only once. Please have your shuttles for each class prepared in advance, as required, to save class time. Classes will be filled on a first come basis.

Tatting & Tulle: Create a tatted veil hairclipFULL 2.0 hrs.Class Type: Project

Jessica SpauldingLevel: Adv. Beg. +Class Limit: 15

Work with tulle to create mini-veil hairpieces accented with tatting! We’ll start this take-home project by adding the lace to the tulle as we tat. Students will be given instructions on how to gather the tulle into a veil and attach it to a clip when their tatted edging is done. This technique could easily be made larger for a bridal veil, but we will have many different colors of tulle to choose from in class so come with threads of any color.

Skills Required: Students must know rings and chains

Techniques Taught: How to work with tulle and attach tatting.

Materials: Size 14 crochet hook; shuttle and ball – may be wound CTM for one color or cut to use two colors. VERY IMPORTANT: the ball thread MUST be size 20 or smaller. The size of the shuttle thread can be larger and does not need to match the ball thread.

Kit: Required, $1.00 for the first kit, $0.75 for each additional desired kit.

Daisy Dangles2.0 hrsClass Type: Technique

This class repeats on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.

The students will be taught the Daisy Picot and then learn a basic design named the “Daisy Dangles”. Simple changes to this pattern could encourage the class to create their own pendants, earrings, bookmarks, zipper pulls and bracelets.

Skills Required: Basic tatting skills.

Techniques Taught: Daisy picot(double stitches on a picot) and adding beads without loading shuttles.

Materials: Basic tatting kit, size 40 thread (2 colors), 2 shuttles, 40 seed beads, size 16 crochet hook and lobster clasp or ring.

Pop/Water Bottle Skirt2.0 hrsClass Type: Project

Students will make a unique item to help identify their own drink bottle on a table from the crowd.

Skills Required: Students must know rings and chains.

Techniques Taught: Measured picots, double picots, adding beads without first pre-stringing them, split chains, frontside/backside, and split rings.

Materials:2 shuttles wound CTM, size 20 thread, 11 dagger/drop beads, 22 size 6/0 beads, 44 size 10/0 beads, and your basic tatting kit which should include a picot gauge(s), tape measure or ruler, closed jump rings, lobster claws, large paper clips or coil-less safety pins, crochet hook to work with the beads, and a beading mat. DO NOT PRESTRING BEADS.

Leaf Necklace2.0 hrsClass Type: Technique

We will be tatting a beautiful Fall Leaf necklace. If you know how to tat a split ring, you can easily learn all the techniques required to tat this necklace. This is a great pattern for using your hand dyed and variegated threads.

Skills Required: Must be proficient with the technique of the unflipped stitch, example: split ring, reverse tatting.

Techniques Taught: Encapsulation, branching encapsulation, spiral chain and tatting over wire.

Materials: 2 shuttles continuously wound with your favorite leaf colored (preferably variegated) thread, your choice of thread size.

Tatting & Hairpin SnowflakeFULL2.0 hrsClass Type: Technique

Learn to make hairpin lace then combine it with tatting to make a snowflake.

Skills Required: Basic tatting and working with 2 shuttles.

Techniques Taught: Hairpin lace, rings off chains, and a knotless way to combine 2 shuttles.

Materials:Hairpin lace loom – adjustable 1” – 4” (available from DS9Design at the workshop or online from Hobby Lobby or Amazon or check your local yarn shop), size 10 crochet hook, size 20 thread, 2 shuttles wound separately, and your basic tatting kit.

Tat a dimensional pendant using a gemstone donut as the center. You will have your choice of two variations – basic tatting or woven chains (challenge version).

Skills Required: Rings, chains, joins, consistent tension and lots of patience.

Techniques Taught: Tatting on a gemstone donut, Celtic woven chains (challenge version).

Materials:Basic version – shuttle and ball or two shuttles wound CTM with size 20 thread (at least 6 yds. on shuttle 1 and 3 yds. on shuttle 2);optional - size 11 seed beads – 13-15 on shuttle, 75 on ball (or shuttle 2). Challenge version requires 2 acrylic Celtic shuttles wound CTM with size 20 thread (at least 6 yds. on each); optional - 13-15 size 11 seed beads on shuttle 1.For both variations - 20mm gemstone donut, picot gauge and basic tatting supplies. The Celtic shuttles will be available from DS9Design at the workshop. They are also available from the maker, Tony Dowden, on eBay and from Handy Hands.

The Catherine wheel join is an alternative to the shuttle (lock) join that allows you to make a smooth and flat join on the bottom side of your tatting. This join is excellent for making onion rings or rosettes. Students will have the option of two different snowflake/flower patterns by Tess Moffett for practicing their new skills.

Skills Required: Students must know rings and chains and be comfortable with manipulating thread.

Techniques Taught: The Catherine wheel join.

Materials: 2 shuttles wound in continuous thread method, thread in size 3, 10, or 20.

Learn the simple art of needle tatting. No experience needed. This class is ideal for those that have never tatted before or who wish to learn to needle tat.

Techniques Taught: Rings, chains, joins, reverse work, reading a pattern, adding a new thread and finishing your project.

Materials:Size 5 tatting needle, preferred, and size 10 thread. Thread will be available for those needing some.

Have you tried a pattern and gotten stuck? Do you have an old project, one you are unable to finish? Are you having trouble getting started? Bring the pattern and the tatted piece worked to that “iffy” part and let’s figure it out together.

Skills Required: Basic tatting skills.

Materials:Basic tatting tools and the project that is giving you trouble.

Fantasy Flowers1.5 hrsClass Type: Project

This class repeats on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

Make flowers from samples of edgings and motifs you no longer want and use up the bits of thread left on a bobbin or shuttles. Don’t worry about counting double stitches or picots, the length of picots or how many rings in a motif. Have fun tatting without worry or stress. There is no right or wrong, just beautiful flowers.

Skills Required: Rings and chains.

Techniques Taught: A new way to put flowers on a stem.

Materials: 2 shuttles wound CTM with size 20 threadand beads if desired. Bring pre-made motifs and edging samples; several shuttles with colored thread ins size 10 to 50; any beads you want to go with size and color of thread chosen; crochet hook to match and basic tatting supplies. Wire for stems will be provided.

Linked Motif EarringsFULL1.5 hrsClass Type: Technique

Patti DuffLevel: Intermediate +Class Limit: 12

Make a pair of earrings by linking motifs as they are tatted. Additional motifs can be added to make a bracelet, necklace or garland. The method of connecting the motifs can also be used to add a charm or largehole bead that slides easily around the ring. This is a rings only pattern.

Skills Required: Rings, very small picots, joins, bead at base of a ring, tatting over tails, and magic thread trick.

Techniques Taught: Joining rings like links of a chain (not by picots).

Materials: 1 shuttle wound with at least 6 yards of size 20 thread; 24 – 3mm or 4mm beads (pre-stringing not required) to coordinate with thread; a crochet hook small enough to pass through your beads, a fine wire beading needle or a needle threader; your choice of earring findings, and basic tatting supplies. Suggested beads – fire polished, pressed glass or crystal bicones. May also use size 6 seed beads.

Kit: Optional, $1.25 - $2.50 for beads only (either fire polished or crystal bicones in limited colors).

Tatting 101 - Beginning Shuttle5.0 hrs.Class Type: Technique

No experience necessary. Students will learn tatting basics - double stitch, rings, chains and joins - using a simple motif pattern. Reading both written and visual patterns will be discussed, as well as some of the useful tools used by tatters.

Materials:A sense of humor, patience and a basic tatting kit consisting of 2 shuttles, one ball each of size 10 crochet thread in white and a bright contrasting color, a pair of scissors or other cutting device, and a crochet hook (suitable for the thread size).

SATURDAY9:30– 11:30 a.m. Classes

Tatted Belt: Working with Size 3 Thread2.0 hrs.Class Type: Technique

Jessica SpauldingLevel: Adv. Beg. +Class Limit: 15

In this class we will discuss some of the tips and tricks for working with large shuttles and size 3 thread. We will use a pattern from Priscilla Tatting book #3 (publ. 1925) to make a decorative belt by attaching our tatting to ribbon. We will see how to use this technique with many different patterns.

Skills Required: Rings and chains.

Techniques Taught: Working with size 3 thread and attaching ribbon to tatting.

Materials: Large shuttle (Starlit, Aerlit, or Tatsy recommended) wound with size 3 thread, and ball - leave attached if you want to make your belt all in one color; a second thread in a smaller size of a matching or close to matching color - size 20 or 40 is recommended but other sizes are fine; and a sewing needle with an eye large enough for the smaller thread. Needles of many sizes will be available for purchase in class.

Update your old patterns or create new ones using some different techniques – Daisy chain and two color rings. Use self-closing mock rings to make a chain of daisies. Prior knowledge of scmr’s is not required.

Materials:Ball + 2 shuttles wound continuous (or know how to hide your ends as you go) in your choice of color and size 10 – 30; short length of thread for halo (metallic or preferred color in approximately the same size as angel); smallest crochet hook that will work with your thread size and your regular tatting kit. Optional: hairpin loom (available from DS9Design), beads for skirt and favorite method of threading beads.

SATURDAY1:00 – 2:30 p.m. Classes

Priscilla Flower Edging in One Color1.5 hrs.Class Type: Project

We will look at a pattern for a flower edging from Priscilla Tatting Book #3, (publ. 1925) and see how we can use modern day techniques such as split rings to adapt the pattern. Students will pick their own project for this pattern. It can be used for many different projects such as an edging, bracelet, necklace or Christmas tree garland.

Skills Required: Students must know rings, chains and split rings.

Techniques Taught: shuttle joins, reading and modifying antique patterns with modern day techniques, and reverse engineering a pattern from a picture. If needed, we will review split rings, but it won’t be the focus of the class.

Materials: Two shuttles wound in continuous thread method, necessary findings for the project the student wishes to do. Findings will also be available for purchase in class.

Kit: Optional, $0.25 for findings if desired.

Inter. Needle Tatting - Beads, Blocks & Baubles1.5 hrsClass Type: Technique

Learn to translate shuttle techniques to a needle. We will learn how to do block tatting, self-closing mock rings, beads inside of a ring, twisted rings and tatting on paperclips. We will also learn how to make baubles with a series of rings and, time permitting, any other techniques the students wish to learn.

Skills Required: You must be able to make rings, chains and joins and be comfortable working with size 20 or 30 thread.

Materials: Size 5 or 7 tatting needle and correct size thread for needle.
