B.D.H.S. Arts offers a certificate of merit and accomplishment known as The Fine Arts Certificate. The certificate begins in Grade 10 and must be completed by a student’s graduating year. Students involved must complete a minimum of three arts courses plus five extracurricular activities. Two of the Arts courses must be in an area of concentration. An area of concentration is defined as two courses in one of the specialized areas of Dance, Drama, Music, and Visual Art. Students interested in seeking this certificate must talk to an arts teacher to obtain more detailed information and then apply by the end of their Grade 10 year.

In order to supplement the consumable products used in some courses, students are encouraged to contribute an enhancement fee of $10-20. Details will be available on the course outlines given out in the first week of class. We understand that some families may have financial limitations; if a student is unable to pay the course enhancement fee due to financial constraints, please contact the principal or course teacher.

Grade 9 Dramatic Arts – ADA1O1Open

This course provides opportunities for students to explore dramatic forms and techniques,using material from a wide range of sources and cultures. Students will use the elementsof drama to examine situations and issues that are relevant to their lives. Students willcreate, perform, discuss, and analyze drama, and then reflect on the experiences todevelop an understanding of themselves, the art form, and the world around them.

Grade 10Dramatic Arts – ADA2O1Open

This course provides opportunities for students to explore dramatic forms, conventions,and techniques. Students will explore a variety of dramatic sources from variouscultures and representing a range of genres. Students will use the elements of drama increating and communicating through dramatic works. Students will assume responsibilityfor decisions made in the creative and collaborative processes and will reflect on theirexperiences.

Grade 11 Dramatic Arts – ADA3M1University/College

This course requires students to create and perform in dramatic presentations. Students will analyze, interpret, and perform dramatic works from various cultures and timeperiods. Students will research various acting styles and conventions that could beused in their presentations, and analyze the functions of playwrights, directors, actors,designers, technicians, and audiences.

Grade 12 Dramatic Arts – ADA4M1University/College

This course requires students to experiment individually and collaboratively with formsand conventions of both drama and theatre from various cultures and time periods.Students will interpret dramatic literature and other texts and media sources while learningabout various theories of directing and acting. Students will examine the significanceof dramatic arts in various cultures, and will analyze how the knowledge and skillsdeveloped in drama are related to their personal skills, social awareness, and goalsafter secondary school.

Grade 9 Dance – ATC1O1Open

This course gives students the opportunity to explore their technical and compositionalskills by applying the elements of dance and the tools of composition in a variety ofperformance situations. Students will generate movement through structured andunstructured improvisation, demonstrate an understanding of safe practices withregard to themselves and others in the dance environment, and identify the functionand significance of dance within the global community.

This course emphasizes the development of students’ technique and creative skills relatingto the elements of dance and the tools of composition in a variety of performance situations.Students will identify responsible personal and interpersonal practices related to danceprocesses and production, and will apply technologies and techniques throughout theprocess of creation to develop artistic scope in the dance arts.

Grade 11 Dance – ATC3M1University/College

This course emphasizes the development of students’ artistry, improvisational andcompositional skills, and technical proficiency in dance genres from around the world.Students will apply dance elements, techniques, and tools in a variety of ways, includingperformance situations; describe and model responsible practices related to thedance environment; and reflect on how the study of dance affects personal and artisticdevelopment.

Grade 12 Dance – ATC4M1University/College

This course emphasizes the development of students’ movement vocabulary relatingto dance genres from around the world, and of their understanding of the elements ofdance and the tools of composition in a variety of performance situations. Students willresearch and explain how physical, intellectual, and artistic skills developed in dancecan be applied in a wide range of careers. They will apply tools and techniques throughoutthe process of creation and presentation, and reflect on how studies in the dance artsaffect personal identity.

Grade 9 Music – AMU1O1Open

This course emphasizes the creation and performance of music at a level consistent withprevious experience and is aimed at developing technique, sensitivity, and imagination. Students will develop musical literacy skills by using the creative and critical analysisprocesses in composition, performance, and a range of reflective and analytical activities.Students will develop an understanding of the conventions and elements of music andof safe practices related to music, and will develop a variety of skills transferable toother areas of their lives.

Grade 10 Music – AMU2O1Open

This course emphasizes the creation and performance of music at a level consistent withprevious experience. Students will develop musical literacy skills by using the creativeand critical analysis processes in composition, performance, and a range of reflective andanalytical activities. Students will develop their understanding of musical conventions,practices, and terminology and apply the elements of music in a range of activities. Theywill also explore the function of music in society with reference to the self, communities,and cultures.

Grade 11 Music – AMU3M1University/College

This course provides students with opportunities to develop their musical literacy throughthe creation, appreciation, analysis, and performance of music, including traditional,commercial, and art music. Students will apply the creative process when performingappropriate technical exercises and repertoire and will employ the critical analysisprocesses when reflecting on, responding to, and analyzing live and recorded performances.Students will consider the function of music in society and the impact of musicon individuals and communities. They will explore how to apply skills developed inmusic to their lives and careers.

Grade 9 Visual Arts – AVI1O1 Open

This course is exploratory in nature, offering an overview of visual arts as a foundationfor further study. Students will become familiar with the elements and principles ofdesign and the expressive qualities of various materials by using a range of media,processes, techniques, and styles. Students will use the creative and critical analysisprocesses and will interpret art within a personal, contemporary, and historical context.

Grade 10 Visual Arts – AVI2O1 Open

This course enables students to develop their skills in producing and presenting artby introducing them to new ideas, materials, and processes for artistic exploration andexperimentation. Students will apply the elements and principles of design when exploringthe creative process. Students will use the critical analysis process to reflect on and interpretart within a personal, contemporary, and historical context.

Grade 10 Arts of the Crafts – AWA2O1Open

This course respects the artistic intention and craft of the artisan. Original works in the textile arts (weaving, appliqué, quilting, needlepoint, fabric painting), pottery techniques, jewelry, papermaking, plaster and cement may be explored through discovery and selected activities. Teachers will utilize Canadian artisans and their crafts as the main resource of this course. The cottage industry (folk, home-based business) and careers in crafts from the past and the present will be investigated (e.g., the Bayeaux Tapestry, ancient pottery, Gothic stained-glass windows.)

Grade 11 Visual Arts – AVI3O1Open
This course focuses on studio activities in one or more of the visual arts, includingdrawing, painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, collage, and/or multimedia art.Students will use the creative process to create art works that reflect a wide range ofsubjects and will evaluate works using the critical analysis process. Students will alsoexplore works of art within a personal, contemporary, historical, and cultural context.

Grade 11 Visual Arts – AVI3M1University/College

This course enables students to further develop their knowledge and skills in visual arts.Students will use the creative process to explore a wide range of themes through studiowork that may include drawing, painting, sculpting, and printmaking, as well as thecreation of collage, multimedia works, and works using emerging technologies. Studentswill use the critical analysis process when evaluating their own work and the work ofothers. The course may be delivered as a comprehensive program or through a programfocused on a particular art form (e.g., photography, video, computer graphics, informationdesign).

Grade 12 Visual Arts – AVI4M1University/College

This course focuses on enabling students to refine their use of the creative processwhen creating and presenting two- and three-dimensional art works using a variety oftraditional and emerging media and technologies. Students will use the critical analysisprocess to deconstruct art works and explore connections between art and society. Thestudio program enables students to explore a range of materials, processes, and techniquesthat can be applied in their own art production. Students will also make connectionsbetween various works of art in personal, contemporary, historical, and cultural contexts.

Grade 12 Sculpture – AWP4M1 University/College

Students will focus on the creation of original sculptures and pottery. A variety of materials will be used including cement, wire, glass, plaster, wood cardboard as well as found objects. This course focuses on the refinement of students’ skills and knowledge in visual arts. Students will analyze sculpture, use theories of art in analyzing and producing sculpture, increase their understanding of stylistic changes in sculpture in Western Art, Canadian Art and art forms from various parts of the world. Modern and historical sculptures will be studied in the classroom and local galleries.

Grade 12 Integrated Arts – AWM4M1 & AWT4M1 University/College

This exciting two-credit course package is dedicated to providing visual art instruction and exploration alongside leadership opportunities in the larger community. The program aims to take art outside of the classroom and consider new contexts for creation. Candidates for the program are university bound with an avid interest in visual art, keen observation skills and a desire to broaden their understanding of the world around them. The course encompasses many different practices from studio intensive portfolio building to outdoor experiences that remove students from the traditional classroom. Students will be active members of the community seeking opportunities to effect change through art and initiative.

Grade 11 Art Exploring Human Existence – AWT3M1/HSP3C1 (or HSP3U1) University/College

This is a cross-curricular dual credit package that includes a Social Science credit and a Visual Art credit. In HSP3C/3U: Introduction to Anthropology, Psychology, and Sociology students will be focusing on anthropological studies, psychological theories, and human behaviour with our societal existence. In the non-traditional Visual Arts course, AWT3M1, students will be focusing on connecting the theories and ideas from the HSP course and intertwining them within the fabric of artistic theory and the creative process.

Prerequisite: AVI1O1 or AVI2O1 AND Grade 10 History

Note: This is a two credit package. Students must take both credits.
