Textbook - Making Music
Dear Student,
Welcome to General Music Class. (Room 223). Mrs. Marcone. Below is a list of topics that will be covered, along with materials used and needed for the class. You will also find the grading categories. Please review this information and maintain this document at the front of your music binder. Good Luck!

* Separator Tabs for each section covered
* 3 holed paper.
* 3 sharpened pencils (at all times!)

Assessment
Verbal quizzes through class questions to test for understanding. Students will receive “Marcone” money for right answers. J
Keyboarding
* Discover the keyboard
o Working in pairs, students will identify all of the components of the Yamaha keyboard
* Students will learn concepts of basic scale building based on the C natural scale.
* Demonstrations will occur in various keys including G, D, A, E.
* We will discuss the circle of 5ths for sharp keys only.
* Students will continue to chart out scales and then play the scales on the keyboard using correct fingering.
* Students are given simple songs to read and play at the keyboard.
Assessment
Individual assessment done through demonstration testing.
Guitar (101)
* Students will view a short DVD presentation of guitar basics. This will include the parts of the guitar, string identification, types of guitar, how to hold the guitar and play basic chords.
* The teacher and any students who are currently taking private guitar lessons will perform demonstrations.
* Students will learn several basic chords on the guitar. G, C, E, e minor, A, a minor, D and D7.
* Students will understand the layout of the strings, string names and modulation (chromatic movement) up the fretboard.
* Students will be allowed in class practice sessions
* Students will learn to play a simple song using three (3) strings.
Assessment
Students assessed individually for their progress with the instrument and concepts associated.
Guitar Test will include names of strings, playing simple chords, playing a song using three strings.
Software
The classroom computers contain several Musical Learning software programs. The students will have in class time to access the programs to develop their sight-reading and rhythmic skills.

Grading:
Students receive an overall grade based on the following categories:
Class Participation (40%) – this includes behavior during class, note taking, listening skills, and your interest and interaction during discussions. This is the most important grade for this class.
Notebook (30%) – you will be required to keep an organized notebook displaying your ability of preparedness. The notebook MUST be present in every class, unless otherwise instructed. Failure to attain and provide a notebook for this class will result in a reduction of your grade by one letter. Notebooks checked randomly throughout the marking period.
Tests (20%)– there will be very few tests in this class. That is why the CP and the Notebook categories are very important to your grade.
Responsibility (10%) –graded on how well you take care of the equipment and of your respect for the tools used in the music classroom.

* Find your seat and prepare for lesson in a timely manner
* Attentiveness during Instruction Time
* Respect for your Classmates
* Raise your hand for questions or to comment.
* No disorderly conduct.
