My Own Private Wilderness: Reading and Writing the Natural World Lacy M. Johnson
The human condition appears perhaps nowhere more mysterious and self-evident than in its relationship to the wild world, and in this seminar we’ll look at a few of the myriad ways this relationship has been documented in essays, memoirs, and narrative nonfiction. In an effort to cultivate a deeper relationship with these intersections, we’ll spend time each day crafting essays, memoirs, and nonfiction of our own, and to that end we’ll also read a few texts to help us sustain and teach good writing long after the seminar is done.

For
Students / Meta-Four
Through Meta-Four Houston, our city’s next generation of leaders discover what matters most to them and how to express that purpose using the most powerful tools available – their own words and voices. Youth ages 13-19 are encouraged to participate in year-round weekly workshops and monthly open-mic events hosted by Writers in the Schools.
For
Schools / In-School Programs
In-school programs focus on the writing process and address key objectives in language arts, including original voice, inventive word choice, sentence fluency, and clear organization. A professional poet, fiction writer or playwright will lead weekly creative writing workshops in a classroom for a full year, publish an anthology of student work and host a field trip to The Menil Collection for a writing tour.
Professional Development
WITS will work together with campus administration customize a hands-on, writing-based professional development experience for teachers. The workshop can take place during in-service days or be embedded within an in-school program. Professional Development and G/T credit will be available.
Summer Bridge Writing Camp
As campuses orient in-coming students with August ‘bridge camps,’ WITS can provide an engaging, creative writing workshop to prepare students for the writing process skills they will need for STAAR writing and beyond.
