Rules for Carrying the Microscope Safely
- Remove the dust cover and leave it neatly to one side in the cabinet.
- Ensure the cord is safely wrapped around the microscope.
- Carry the microscope with TWO hands – one on the arm and one under the base.
- Place the microscope gently on the workbench, at least 10 cm from the edge, with the eyepiece toward you.
Get Ready to Use the Microscope
- Use the coarse focus to lower the stage as far as it will go.
- Turn the revolving turret to position the LOW power (4x) objective directly above the stage.
- Unwrap the power cord and plug it in.
- Turn on the lamp.
Putting the Microscope Away Safely
- Turn off the lamp.
- Use the coarse focus to lower the stage as far as it will go.
- Turn the revolving turret to position the LOW power (4x) objective directly above the stage.
- Unplug the microscope. (DO NOT PULL the cord – pull the thick end of the plug)
- Wrap the power cord around the cord clips or base.
- Carry the microscope with TWO hands – one on the arm and one under the base.
- Replace the dust cover.
How to make a Wet-mount Slide
- Get a clean slide and coverslip from your teacher.
- Place ONE drop of water in the middle of the slide. Don’t use too much or the water will run off the edge and make a mess!
- Place the edge of the cover slip on one side of the water drop.
- Slowly lower the cover slip on top of the drop.
- Place the slide on the stage and view it first with the LOW objective. Once you see the image clearly, you can rotate the nosepiece to view the slide with the HIGHER objectives.
- Do NOT USE coarse focus with higher objectives.
- Use unlined paper.
- Always use a pencil.
- Draw clean unbroken lines to draw WHAT YOU SEE. (Think about proportions.)
- Use labels to identify features and colours. (DO NOT colour the diagram.)
- Label lines should be horizontal whenever possible. Never cross labeling lines.
- The title should be the common name of the organism. (Example: Wolf)
- If you use a scientific name write it under the picture.
- Give the size of the organism using a scale bar, or give microscope magnification.
