Main areas of
responsibility:
- To expand university networks and links with schools and colleges in the South East in order to meet the university’s student recruitment targets.
- To be responsible for managing university representation at external higher education exhibitions and other promotional events in the UK and EU.
- To develop and implement a programme of university visits and events for targeted school/college groups and individuals and support the delivery of university open days.
- To assist with work elsewhere in Academic Services, including enrolment, graduation ceremonies and, in particular confirmation and clearing, as appropriate.
Specific duties:
- To expand university networks and links with schools and colleges in the South East in order to meet the university’s student recruitment targets.
1.1.To undertake visits into Compact colleges to build relationships with advisers and course tutors and develop progression links, deliver progression to HE workshops and advice to students, parents and advisers.
1.2.To develop subject specific knowledge in order to deliver subject representation at external school and college events.
1.3.To maintain an overview of academic outreach carried out across the university.
1.4.To liaise with academic colleagues to develop targeted recruitment programmes for under-recruiting subject areas.
1.5.To represent the university at school/college parents’ evenings, by delivering presentations relating to progression to HE.
1.6.To represent the university at meetings with heads of careers and heads of schools/colleges externally.
1.7.To work with colleagues in Marketing and Communications to develop and maintain webpages and communications highlighting the work of the Student Recruitment team.
1.8.To monitor applications/enrolments from targeted schools/colleges and provide regular reports to the Compact Liaison Officer.
1.9.To ensure recruitment activity supports the university’s aims in relation to widening access and student retention and success.
- To be responsible for the organisation of university representation at external higher education exhibitions and other promotional events in the UK and EU.
2.1.To confirm bookings and to liaise with the Compact Liaison Officer to establish appropriate representation for each event.
2.2.To liaise with Marketing and Communications to develop exhibition material for events.
2.3.To determinethe number of prospectuses required to cover events and confirm freight arrangements with Marketing and Communications and the university’s nominated freight courier.
2.4.To work with colleagues in Enquiries and Marketing and Communications to develop the use of social media to support and enhance the university’s presence at HE exhibitions and other student recruitment activity.
2.5.To represent the university at higher education exhibitions and careers fairs, providing advice on all aspects relating to the student experience at the University of Brighton, both within the UK and target countries in the EU.
2.6.To operate as a specialist concerning the university’s portfolio of courses, admissions criteria, social and academic facilities, support provided by central departments and student funding arrangements, in order to provide high quality and accurate advice and guidance to potential applicants, advisers and other stakeholders.
2.7.To establish systems to ensure that enquiries received during external promotional events are dealt with in an appropriate and timely fashion.
2.8.In liaison with Marketing and Communications establish an appropriate contract strategy for potential students visiting external events.
2.9.To capture data from and track students visiting HE exhibitions and provide reports.
2.10.To develop systems to aid the provision of regular reports to the Compact Liaison Officer in relation to subject trends and changes in prospective student attitudes/behaviour.
2.11.Contribute to the development of recruitment strategy by researching recruitment trends for undergraduate and postgraduate students from within the UK and EU.
2.12.To keep abreast of national policy shifts, relating to post-16 education and their potential to impact on student progression to higher education and inform line manager and team members as appropriate.
2.13.To be familiar with a range of EU qualifications and their equivalence to UK qualifications, in order to advise potential students appropriately.
- To develop and implement a programme of university visits and events for targeted school/college groups and individuals and support the delivery of university open days.
3.1.To develop, plan and manage a range of on-campus visits from targeted schools/colleges and individuals to raise awareness of the University of Brighton and encourage applications.
3.2.To promote and co-ordinate visits, including devising the programme, delivering presentations, co-ordinating academic staff and overseeing all administrative tasks.
3.3.To undertake risk assessments and evaluate procedures for school visits in accordance with the university’s Health and Safety guidelines.
3.4.To provide evaluation reports on activities and to advise the Compact Liaison Officer on enhancements and opportunities for new activities.
3.5.To deliver general information sessions to visitors during university open days.
3.6.To co-ordinate and supervise general activities during open days.
- To assist with work elsewhere in Academic Services, including enrolment, graduation ceremonies and, in particular confirmation and clearing, as appropriate.
4.1.To keep up-to-date with all aspects of departmental policy and procedure.
4.2.To assist with general department clerical and administrative work during periods of heavy workload or to cover absence, when required.
4.3.To contribute to planning of the university’s recruitment clearing operation and supervise students and/or staff as required.
Selection criteria:The criteria below indicate the qualities that are needed to do the job well. Candidates will be selected according to the extent to which they satisfy these criteria. Evidence of potential will also be considered. Most of the criteria must normally be met in order to qualify for selection.
Essential:
Knowledge/qualifications:
- Comprehensive knowledge of the secondary and post-16education sector in the UK;
- Experience of working in Student Recruitment within a higher education institution;
- Experience of issues facing higher education students;
- Experience of communicating with school and college students;
- Experience of delivering presentations to a variety of audiences;
- Experience of co-ordinating events/projects with the 16-19 age group;
- Sound administrative experience including effective office organisation and experience of using databases / spreadsheets.
Communication:
- Clear, concise, timely and appropriate written and oral communication, with a particular emphasis on presentation skills;
- Ability to relate well to colleagues in academic schools and other departments, prospective students and their parents/carers and advisers;
- Ability to write effective, clear and concise reports;
- Experience in the use of social media.

Technical: Ability to work with visual display equipment; fast accurate keyboard skills with the ability to use word processing and spreadsheet packages.
Physical: Able to lift, carry and set up exhibition and presentation equipment, according to health and safety guidelines.
Transport:Holds a full driving licence. The post holder will be required to travel to internal and external sites and transportdisplay equipment and promotional literature.
Ability to work unsocial hours/out of office hours
- There is a requirement within this role to work some evenings for which time off in lieu will be granted.
- The Student Recruitment team organises 15 Open days and these are traditionally held on Saturdays. The post holder will be expected to work a significant proportion of these events, for which time off in lieu will be usually granted.
- It is likely that annual leave for this post will not be permitted outside of school/college vacation periods.
Desirable:
- Experience of coordinating/supervising work of colleagues.
- First-hand experience of studying at university.
- Knowledge of relevant health and safety requirements.
- Familiarity with SITS.
