- Administrative Update
Federal Review: The Federal Review team leader was in Chicago and DFSS hosted a webinar to introduce her. The team leader gave a brief overview of what to expect and answered some questions from participants who logged on (approximately 120). DFSS is aware that there were some technical difficulties and some participants were not able to view or listen, however the webinar will not be repeated.
The DFSS 2011 Federal Review is scheduled for April 25th through May 6th. With respect to Education, a few key points discussed were: site visits will be at least1 ½ days for larger agencies(these agencies will be visited first); CLASS observations will be conducted 8 of the 10 days the reviewers are here; there will be teacher interviews, and a sampling (2 of each) of Family Child Care, EHS home base, and HS home base programs; socialization observations are questionable at this time. The most tedious task, as stated by the review team leader will be reviewing teacher qualifications/provider credentials.
Denise Jordan is in Baltimore for the OHS Summit “On the Road to School Readiness”. A few key points that were shared and programs should make sure they are: (a) becoming familiar with the new Head Start Child Development and Early Learning Framework, (b) using all forms of data from curriculum assessment, environmental rating scales and PIRresults for program planning (c) ensuring program goals and data indicate children are progressing toward school readiness (d) sharing information with parents and the parent policy committee. The Director of OHS,Yvette Fuentes also mentioned that they were developing an outcomes framework for EHS.
Teaching Strategies GOLD: Lesson PlanningMarch training dates may be shifting; Committee members were advised to hold off on registering.
DFSS advised members to provide their email addresses if they are not receiving Denise Jordan’s emails with Education Advisory meeting minutes/updates.
Suggestions were made by Co-Chair, Kim Shelton, LSSI to make sure
IMIL – “I Am Moving I Am Learning” is being included during planning and documented in lesson plans, which will probably be something that the reviewers will be looking for as well. It was also advised that committee members understand the role of the Head Start framework and “School Readiness”, the role of curriculum and instruction and using data to enhance teachers and children’s learning experience. Ms. Shelton also suggested that each agency’sEducation Plan include how they are supporting English language learners.
