To benefit proton therapy and research

To the friends of UFPTI’s Play Golf – Fight Cancer 2011 Tournament

The University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute is changing the way cancer is being treated. August 2011 marks the 5th anniversary of the opening of the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute to treat cancer patients. With a focus on research,UFPTI is committed to changing the way cancer is treated. In five years more than 95,000 proton treatments have been delivered to more than 2800 patients. We treat more than 100 patients a day and our patients come from all 50 states and around the world. In 2010, UFPTI was recognized as one of the top 10 proton facilities in the world. UFPTI treatsprostate cancer, pediatric malignancies, sarcomas, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, head and neck and brain tumors. The proton research at UFPTI is led by Medical Director, Dr. Nancy Mendenhall, who is committed to improving the outcomes of cancer patients!

Play Golf – Fight Cancer is the fund-raiser that supports the proton research at UFPTI. In seven short years we have raised over $830,000, which first went towards bricks and mortar. Since 2006 all of our net profits ($466,000), have gone directly to our research. The goal of this research is to better utilize proton beam therapy and to make it available to many more individuals facing the fight against cancer. It is through researchthat better proton therapy technology will be developed, better proton therapy techniques will be defined, and new applications for proton therapy will be discovered. Play Golf – Fight Cancer is unique in that our tournament is held in Orlando, supports a facility located in Jacksonville, yet the idea to build a proton facility originated in Gainesville at the University of Florida.

The 8th annual Play Golf – Fight Cancer tournament will be held on Monday, October 10, 2011. We have corporate and individual sponsorships available at several different levels. Due to the growth that Play Golf – Fight Cancer has experienced, we are moving our tournament to the Reunion Resort and Club in Orlando, Florida. We will be utilizing 2 of their 3 challenging courses, the Arnold Palmer Course and the Tom Watson Course.
