Overview of the new configuration for ESL10 (to be piloted in F08 and implemented Sp09):
BOTH courses would be multi-skills, but the distinctions are found in 1) the texts they use, and 2) the emphasis they place on particular skills. The course syllabi would indicate the grammar focus that both courses would have (in common) each week.

ESL10 (Reading/Writing, Lab)6 units

Multiple Skills Preparation with emphasis on listening/speaking and grammar
- Meets twice weekly for 3 hours each plus 2 hours required in the lab
- Required Texts:

- Students are recommended to concurrently enroll in ESL10 (L/S/G)
- Students may place out of this course
- Students may repeat this course
- Common exit exam for all sections
- Objectives:
- Distinguish between various types of sentences
- Demonstrate comprehension with complete sentences
- Choose appropriate synonyms and definitions for paraphrasing
- Identify main ideas and supporting details in reading passages
- Identify contextual clues, transition words, word forms
- Choose when to consult an Eng-Eng dictionary in print and online
- Choose subject-verb agreement and singular-plural inflections
- Distinguish present, past, and future time
- Identify parts of speech, including simple modals
- Use SVO word order consistently
- Use contextual clues and cohesive markers to guess meaning in short reading passages
- Report information from readings
- Format academic papers
- Access, read, and discriminate among web pages
- Demonstrate basic information competency
- Demonstrate development of a personal system for organizing electronic information
