MLA Works Cited Page – 8th Edition
Although many resources exist that cite information automatically, being able to create a works cited page from scratch is an important skill. You may use resources to start, but use the following information to edit and correct citations.
Information to Collect:
- Author/ Editor Name(s)
- Article Names (Put in quotations)
- Title of the website, project, or book (put in italics) (also called container)
- Any version numbers available, including editions (ed.), revisions, posting dates, volumes (vol.), or issue numbers (no.).
- Publisher information (name and date)
- Page numbers/ Paragraph numbers (abbreviated p. or pp./ par. or pars.)
- The URL (without the
- Date you accessed the material (especially if you cannot find a publication date)
General Format:
Author.“Title of Article/ Chapter.”Title of website, project, or book, Other contributors (translators or editors), Version (edition), Number (vol. and/or no.), Publisher, Publication Date, Location (pages, paragraphs and/or URL, DOI or permalink). Date of Access (if applicable).
Example:
“Biography Nelson Mandela.”Biography Online, 25 Feb. 2017, Accessed 18 May 2017.
“Nelson Mandela Mini Biography.”Youtube, uploaded by Biography, 16 Feb. 2016,
For more specific information on citing Youtube videos, a page on a website, an entire website, etc. or for more specific information on citing books visit
Important Reminders:
- Order sources on the Works Cited page alphabetically based on the author’s last name or title of the article/ chapter if there is no author.
- Indent each line after the first.
- Dates are written in the following format: Day, Month (abbreviated), Year.
