2. CLASSIFICATION
A. The meet shall be conducted as a co-educational meet with boys and girls competing in their respective events.
Proposed:A. The meet shall be conducted as a co-educational meet with boys and girls competing in their respective events. On a 2-year trial basis, the Zone meet shall be 2 days, held on the Friday, Saturday prior to Provincials.
Rationale:
Given the amount of events that seem to be accumulating within high school track & field, a two day event could greatly benefit athletes in several ways.
- Given there would be more time in between events; athletic performance could increase. You no longer have an athlete running the 1500 and 3000 on the same days, or trying to do all three throwing events in one day.
- It would also help better prepare our zone athletes for a multi-day competition like provincials given they have now had that experience of racing over two days. Many of our athletes are still not in club track and this may help provide those athletes some experience of a multi-day competition.
- If executed properly it could make the meet feel more like a championship experience.
- Parents would have better opportunity to watch their child compete.
There are some definite cons: extra travel or accommodation expenses, extra day of volunteers for track events (applies to Med Hat/Leth); field events remains the same 2-event commitment. But I think it would be better for kids and enhancing the sport of track and field, which is ultimately why we coach at a high school level.
Motion DEFEATED
NOTE: If this motion passes, Zones would be May 27, 28 in Medicine Hat. The schedule would follow the ASAA Provincial schedule, with the addition of 300m Hurdles and Pentathlon. Para and Special O events are also included. If the motion is defeated, Zones will be Tue, May 24Wed. May 25 in Medicine Hat and Marg will work on a way to include 300m Hurdles and Pentathlon in the schedule.
2. Section Section XIXTRACK AND FIELD page 19 Motion WITHDRAWN (IF Motion 1. Passes)
Current: 6.General Regulations for Entries
B. Districts are permitted two entries in each event/category, except one relay entry per category……
Proposed:6.General Regulations for Entries
B. Districts are permitted three entries in each event/category, except one relay entry per category.
Rationale: With a 2-day Zone meet, there is more time for Sprint heats and an increase from 12 to 18 competitors in all events. This would give more athletes the opportunity to compete in a larger meet.
