RULES FOR SCHOOL BREAKFAST and LUNCH TRAY CONTEST

MSNA and SNA membership and attendance at Conference are required to participate. This contest is for all members except directors/administrators. Please register for the contest by October 21, 2016. Each contestant must submit all necessary paperwork with their 8X10 glossy color picture of the tray in advance to Alisa Jordan by mail no later than

October 21, 2016. Please mail to the following address:

Please submit all necessary paperwork with your picture. A contestant may enter all contests. The theme this year is “HEROES OF CHILD NUTRITION”. Meals displayed in pictures must not exceed recommended portions for secondary students or the grade group selected. Using the recipes that are available in your kitchens, create a tray that meets the nutritional standards with a colorful array of fruits and vegetables.

Judging will be based on:

Meal Pattern – meet USDA school lunch or breakfast meal pattern as described for grades K-12. (1-10 points)

Appearance – entry will be judged on color, shapes, and textures of the food presented on the tray. (1-10 points)

Variety – entry will be judged on the variety of foods or combination of foods used on the tray. (1-15 points)

Originality – entry will be judged on the originality of preparation and presentation of foods. (1-15 points)

Nutrition Standards – food displayed on tray must meet the nutrition standards for Breakfast and Lunch. This must be documented by listing all foods or food combinations (including condiments), the serving sizes for the age/grade group, and indicating the food component. (1-15 points)

Written Statement- tell us briefly on the provided form why you think your tray should be selected. (1-10 points)

Total Possible Points: 75

Prizes: 1st, 2nd and 3rd place contestants will receive a cash prize and all participants will receive a certificate.

Directors- We recommend you review to verify if the contestant has met the nutrition standards.

Contestants:

1. Please fill out the following two page form and submit it with your tray (picture) entry.

2. Submit your Product Information Sheet to verify the nutrition standards have been met.

3. Write your Name, District Name and School Name on the back of your picture.

4. Submit one complete packet in the following order for each contest that you enter.

STORY BOARD CONTEST

MSNA and SNA membership and attendance at Conference are required to participate. This contest is for all members except directors/administrators. Please register for the contest by October 21, 2016.

The Story Board shall be free-standing style that is at least 36” high. It shall be threefold design with two sides and one central section.

The Story Board shall reflect in words, pictures, articles, and/or illustrate “HEROES OF CHILD NUTRITION”. Tell us about a successful event, promotion, or how you highlighted “Team Collaboration” in your school, whether you are participating in National School Lunch Program, National School Breakfast Program, MS DOD/USDA Commodities, Farm to School initiative or Fresh Fruit Vegetable Grant. All items shall be affixed to the storyboard. For guidance go to: http://www.fns.usda.gov/child-nutrition-programs

The Story Board should be presented in a way that requires the viewer no more than 5-10 minutes to understand the activity.

Presented on your Story Board shall be a description of the project. The description shall be a minimum of one paragraph and no longer than one typewritten double spaced page.

Each contestant shall be responsible for bringing their Story Board on Friday, November 11, 2016 between 4:30 – 5:30 PM to a designated area in the Bancorp South Arena. The storyboard will be judged between 5:45-6:45 PM on Friday. Story Boards will be displayed during Exhibit Hours. Please pick up your display immediately after the close of the Exhibit Hall on Saturday, November 12, 2016.

Judging will be based on:

Objective – Define purpose of activity and state the target audience (i.e., Students, Teachers, Parents, etc.) in a written statement presented on your story board. (1-10 points)

Nutritional Impact – How did this affect your target audience? (i.e., did more student consume fruits/vegetables, how did your student participation increased, and which age/grade group was affected etc.) display by using charts or graphs. (1-10 points)

Creativity – Originality, marketing and highlighting fresh fruits and vegetables consumed in the school, and merchandising techniques (1-10 points)

Promotions – Steps taken to make staff, student body and community aware of activities. (1-10 points)

Participation – of students, teachers, administration, parents, support staff, and child nutrition program.

Eye Appeal and Visual Presentation. Clear approach (1-10 points)

Overall Quality of Project – clean, neat, organized. (1-10 points)

CUPCAKE WARS CONTEST

MSNA and SNA membership and attendance at Conference are required to participate. This contest is for all members except supervisors/administrators. The contest will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2016. Please register for the contest by October 21, 2016.

Entries will be judged on taste of cupcakes and decoration. Each contestant is allowed to bring six prebaked, undecorated cupcakes. All cupcakes will be decorated on site. Decorations are at the discretion of each participant. You can decorate them any way you like. Please make all decoration items edible.

Contestants are required to bring:

·  Six cupcakes prepared ahead and brought with contestant.

·  Any foods/sweets/icing to decorate the cupcakes.

·  Supplies that may be needed (i.e. wooden skewers, tooth picks, peelers, knives, and etc.)

·  Clean up towels

MSNA will furnish the following items:

·  Work station

·  Garbage can with liner

·  Clean up supplies

Ground Rules:

·  Cupcakes must be baked and prepared and brought to sight. All must be the same flavor.

·  All extra foods/sweets are to be brought and prepared on sight.

·  All decorating is to take place on the day of contest. Decorating ahead of time is not permitted.

·  All products must be edible.

·  You may have friends/family for support, but no outside coaching.

·  Cannot leave the room once the competition begins. Time limit is 1 hr 30 minutes.

·  Each person is responsible for cleaning their area after the completion.

The contest will be conducted at the BancorpSouth Arena using the prep areas for display. Contestants are to be registered and ready to begin creating their entry by 11:30 AM on Saturday, 11/12/2016, of the MSNA Annual Conference. Contestants will have one hour and thirty minutes to complete their project.

Judging will be based on:

Eye appeal of the entry- should be pleasing to the eye, attractive not messy, and student/customer friendly (1-15 points)

Varied Colors, Textures and Shapes –entry will be judged on use and variety of colors, textures and shapes (1-10 points)

Originality- entry will be judged on the originality of preparation, presentation, and individuality of the display. (1-10 points)

Variation in Techniques used-entry will be judged on the variation of the techniques used to make the most of the presentation. (1-15 points)

Taste – entry will be judged on all around taste of cupcake, icing and any other decorations added to the cupcake.

Safety and Sanitation of Work Area -entry will be judged on keeping a clean and organized work space. Proper use of gloves, knife techniques and other safety precautions (1-10 points)

Total Possible Points 60 Prizes: 1st, 2nd and 3rd place contestants will receive a cash prize and all participants will receive a certificate.

70’s Soul Train Costume Contest

New Contest: Saturday Night’s industry party will be a costume contest this year for those that want to participate. Dress up in your grooviest, funkiest, 1970’s costume and come join the fun. The D.J. will be playing a variety of music to put you in the dancing spirit.

No need to fill out an entry form for this contest. If you wish to participate, just show up in your favorite “Soul Train” costume and you will be given a number at the door.
