Dear Beck Families,

We had another busy week here at Beck. Lots of great news to tell you before I run out to "Meet Us at Menchies" - Our Student Council fundraiser is tonight at the 25 Mile Road Menchies. Just tell them you are from Beck, and a portion of the sale will be donated back to our school. Menchies is open until 10:00 p.m. It's a treat that helps our school! :)

1.Career Focus Luncheon - All our 6th graders looked 'business-like' as they attended the 24th annual Utica Career Focus Luncheon. Thanks to the Utica Foundation forEducational Excellence, the 6th grade students in our district have the opportunity to attend a business luncheon - complete with resumes and business cards. This year our 6th graders enjoyed lunch at Palazzo Grande, shared their career goals with a business person at each table, and heard keynote speaker Mr. Andy Appleby, owner of the United Shore Professional Baseball League (USPBL). Appleby, who opened the Jimmy John’s Field in Utica nearly a year ago, spoke to more than 2,000 UCS sixth graders at the annual UCS Career Focus Luncheon.

2.Fourth Grade Concert - Our 4th graders dazzled us with their talents on the recorder, and their singing this week. Great job earning "Recorder Karate" belts everyone.Big thanks to Mrs. Burris who does a great job getting our students to shine in the musical arts! Our 5th graders are up next. Their concert will be May 18.

3.Teacher Appreciation Week - The staff at Beck enjoyed a fabulous "Teacher Appreciation Week" thanks to our own BFV. Mrs. Poretta and her committee spent the week making sure our staff knew they were appreciated by treating them to delicious snacks, fun prizes, shouts outs on every door, and a delicious luncheon. I know I speak for the entire staff when I say, "Thank you to everyone who contributed to this week's festivities!" We feel much appreciated!

4.Math Olympians - 1st Place Team Event! - Our Math Olympians competed this week in the Utica District Math Tournament. Over 60 teams from around UCS competed. I'm proud to say that Team A (Celine T., Logan B., Jack J., and Jackson B.) came in 1st place in the Team Event, 4th place in Quiz Bowl, and 2nd place Overall. Great job to ALL our Math Olympians - especially to Mrs. Jarzyna who pitched in to be the coach for the tournament! Thanks, too, to Mrs. Struck, Mrs. Rimasand Mr. Sikorski for their work with the team this year!

5.Social Studies Olympiad - Team coach, Mrs. Domke, reports that our 13 Social Studies Olympiad participants competed in the Off-Site Tournament this past week. Thanks to all the parents who help their student by making sure they are well rested and eat a good breakfast! Our 4th graders will start their M-Stepassessments on Wed., May 10 and 12.
