ST CATHERINE’S SAILING CLUB NEWS July 2006
COMMODORE’S OPENER
The sailing season is well underway and it is good to see so many boats out on the water for both racing and training events.
It seems incredible that the club’s Annual Regatta is only a few days away. Once again Joel has organised a full programme of events over the weekend 7, 8 and 9 July plus we can expect the usual culinary delicacies from our hardworking House Committee. So no excuse to miss what will be a great weekend, we even managed to avoid a clash with the final of the World Cup, how’s that for planning!
Once again our juniors have been great ambassadors of the club with successful representation at the Jeux Des Isles in Sicily and closer to home in the Guernsey Open. It is not just the juniors who are travelling we also have a mixture of seniors and juniors who have just competed very successfully at the Laser Club Championships and Streaker Nationals, with St Catherine’s winning Champion Club in the Laser Radial Fleet in the aforementioned Laser event. More about this in the next newsletter.
On a final note the raft race held on 24 June was yet again as last year a fantastic event and just as much fun.

HOUSE COMMITTEE
SCSC Regatta Weekend 7 – 9 July
Don’t miss out on a great weekend full of sailing and hopefully lots of sunshine too.
Off the water the House Committee will be busy preparing delicious fare to tempt the appetite and keep sailors and landlubbers going strong.
Louise is organising refreshments for Friday evening’s sailing. Sarah and I will be providing lunch and a late afternoon BBQ on Saturday.
Ingrid and Lisa will be laying on lunch and afternoon tea and cakes on Sunday. Lunches will cost £5 and the BBQ £8.
Hope to see lots of you there and offers of help will be much appreciated.

Junior Regatta 15 July – A BBQ is planned but please contact me if you can help with catering in any way.
Jubilee Regatta 6 August – Lunch will be provided for £5.
Commodore’s Cup 24 September – Heather will be doing lunch.
Well that’s far enough ahead for now and don’t forget the fixture list has all the dates for socials as well as sailing!

The entry fee for the entire weekend is £7.50 for full members and £3 for juniors.

Summer Courses
We are running two summer courses this year. The first is four days from Monday 24 July to Thursday the 27th. The second is for five days from Monday 21 August to Friday 25 August. Both are from 10am until 4pm. Beginners and improvers are all welcome. Places are limited so to reserve your place please contact me on T 855788. You will need to provide a packed lunch each day but extra snacks and drink will also be provided. The four day course is £100 and the five day course £125.

SPEED LIMIT – SECOND REMINDER
Rib drivers please remember to keep to the speed limit in the bay. We’ve had yet another complaint and it would be catastrophic if we were banished to beyond the limit.

TROPHEE DES ISLES 2006
This is an annual competition between the junior sailors of St Malo, Guernsey and St Catherine’s. It is our turn to host the event which this year this will be held over the weekend of 26 and 27 August.
The competition is held in three classes - Laser (4.7 or Radial), Topper and Optimist. In addition this time we will hold a novice regatta fleet for Opi / Optimist sailors who have not sailed in a big regatta before - an ideal introduction.
Over the past few years we have visited France for this event and have always been very well looked after and we would like to reciprocate in every way. So all junior sailors who plan to be here that weekend please come and support this event. Fill out the enclosed slip and return it to me or email to
The visiting teams will arrive on the Friday evening and will need to drop boats off at the club. We will race all day on Saturday and have a social BBQ at the club at about 6pm. All will be very welcome. The BBQ will cost £5 for adults / non sailors over 12; the cost for sailors is included in the entry fee. Please indicate numbers attending on the enclosed form.
We will need help with safety boats, regatta fleet, catering, hosting, prizes, sponsorship - so please also indicate on the form what help you and your family will be able to give. I look forward to hearing from you.

STREAKER NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Streaker National’s took place over the weekend of 24 and 25 June at the Pennine Sailing Club and a 120 acre reservoir in the High Peak near to Sheffield. A strong contingent from St Catherine’s represented Jersey – Tony Newcombe, Dave Firby, Henry Perkins and I.
We took the overnight ferry to Portsmouth and drove up to Sheffield on the Friday calling at Pinnell and Baxters, chandlers of Northampton on the way. After sorting out our boats we spent the evening in Holmfirth which included an enjoyable pub meal and some football.
Racing took place over two days – full details and background may be found on the Streaker website www.streaker-class.org.uk ,- tab Open Scene. A record sixty boats took part and after five races we ended up 18th (Tony), 26th (Henry), 48th (Dave) and 56th (me). Competition was of the highest order with Steve Cockerill narrowly beating Ian Jones – a previous winner – for first place.
We drove back to Weymouth on the Sunday afternoon listening to England struggling to beat Equador on the way. After a welcome overnight rest at the local Travel Inn we took the fast ferry returning to Jersey around 10am.
Thanks to Tony Newcombe for organising the trip and to the Pennine Club for putting on a well organised event. One moment of magic for the record was helping Dave sort out his footwear. After the first race on Sunday he discovered with our help, that he’d got his sailing boots on the wrong feet!
