Dear Parents/Guardians/Students,

Welcome to our class! The Health Education Staff at Simon Kenton is planning an exciting and rewarding year for our students. The curriculum is designed to address current health issues that affect life long decisions. Our goal is to develop a sound knowledge background and a positive attitude toward healthy living for responsible decisions to reduce high-risk behaviors. The students should be able to take what we give them and develop a life-long healthy style of living. Selected topics include: personal health; fitness and safety; consumerism; nutrition; alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; communication and resistance skills; mental and emotional health; and human reproduction. In addition, students will go through the American Red Cross First Aid and Safety Course in an attempt to become certified in CPR and usage of an AED. In order to achieve our goal, there are several expectations, requirements, and policies designed for student success.

DAILY CLASSROOM REQUIREMENTS

  • Daily Agenda
  • Pen and pencil
  • Paper (loose leaf paper or a notebook with perforated edges)
  • 3 ring binder (or folder for only this class)

CLASS EXPECTATIONS

  • Respect yourself and your classmates
  • Listen when others are speaking
  • Be prepared and ready to learn (all materials and assignments must be ready for class use)
  • Full participation in class
  • Follow all school expectations and guidelines

GRADING POLICY

A student’s grade will be determined with consideration given to daily performance evaluation, cooperative learning (group activities and discussions), participation in class, special projects, and written exams.

TESTS AND PROJECTS: 40%

DAILY:20%

FOLDER:30%

MISCELLANEOUS:10%

*Daily grades will be comprised of homework, class work, class participation, agenda usage, and other projects assigned by the staff.

**In addition to these grades, a comprehensive final exam will be given at the end of the semester. The student’s semester grade will be calculated as 40% for 1st quarter, 40% for the second quarter, and 20% for the final exam.

ABSENCES AND MAKE-UP WORK

Regular class attendance is vital to academic success. Students will be responsible for ALL make-up work and assignments resulting from EXCUSED ABSENCES. It is completely the responsibility of the student to ask for and obtain anyand all missed assignments. Failure to complete such assignments will result in a zero for that assignment. School policy does not allow make-up work to be given for unexcused absences. However, it can be made up to be put in for the student’s folder grade.

All make-up work (if eligible) will be collected depending on the days missed. For example, Susan misses on Monday with an excused absence. She returns to school on Tuesday and gets her assignments missed. She has one (1) day to return them (due on Wednesday). Two days absent, allows two days to finish and so on.

DAILY AGENDAS

School policy states that each student must bring his/her agenda to each class. This is used as a hall pass, as well as weekly planner. I will check these each week based on the class schedule (2ndperiod checked on Tuesday, 3rd period on Wednesday,4thperiod checked on Wednesday, 5th period checked on Friday). On occasion I will check these randomly…so bring them everyday!!! This “check” will be factored into your daily grade for the week.

FOLDER

Each student will be required to have a folder for this class only. Students will keep all assignments in this folder (homework, daily grades, exams, etc). At the end of each quarter, I will check these folders for the assignments to use as a TEST GRADE. I will post weekly (or at the conclusion of each unit) the items need in this folder. This first day letter is the first item to be entered in the folder and will be used for both quarters.

CLASS PROCEDURES

  • Walk into the classroom before the bell rings (tardiness is not tolerated)
  • Report to assigned desk before the bell rings (students not in assigned desk will be counted tardy)
  • Check the board for beginning activity and work
  • Participate fully in ALL class activities
  • Dismissal by Mr. Drake—NOT THE BELL!!
  • No candy, soft drinks, juice, or chips are permitted (bottled water is permitted, but this privilege can be revoked)
  • Gum is permitted, however, no bubbles or cracking of gum
  • EACH STUDENT WILL RECEIVE TWO (2) HALLPASS FOR THE SEMESTER ONLY. NO STUDENT WILL BE PERMITTED TO LEAVE WITHOUT HIS/HER AGENDA. THESE ARE A “GIFT” AND CAN BE REVOKED AT ANY TIME.

REWARDS AND CONSEQUENCES

REWARDS: Rewards are given for various reasons. Examples are: perfect test scores, highest grade in the class, or going above and beyond normal expectations. Rewards are given in the form of pioneer pride, hall passes or bonus points.

CONSEQUENCES: Students NOT performing within class expectations will be punished according to the classroom and school policies. Loss of hall passes, after school detention, or parent-teacher conferences are examples of consequences depending on the severity of the situation.

We will make every effort to keep students and parents/guardians informed of student performance. Parents/Guardians are also encouraged to contact us if there are any questions or concerns. My voice mail number and email address is listed below and I welcome your calls and interest in your student’s success!I look forward to an exciting year and working with the students at SimonKentonHigh School.

Sincerely,
