Poison Hemlock

Lesson 2: What are the effects and dangers of Poison Hemlock?

Objective: Students will understand the effects and dangers of Poison Hemlock.

Students will need: Poison Hemlock crossword maze and Poison Hemlock dot-to-dot.

Vocabulary Review:

toxicity – the amount which a substance can harm a person or animal

noxious – harmful to the body

herbaceous – a plant with a non-woody stem that dies down to the soil level.

biennial - appearing every two years.

herbicide – a substance known to kill plants

Ask, “How many of you have ever pulled up grass or weeds and fed them to cows or horses on the other side of a fence?” Let students share.

Tell students, “There are certain plants that can grow on the sides of roadways that are very harmful to both humans and many animals.”

Ask, “Does anyone remember the name of the plant that we talked about yesterday?” (Let students respond)

Ask, “Who can tell me some of the characteristics of Poison Hemlock? (Let students respond)

Tell students, “Poison hemlock is often found on poorly drained soils, such as ditches, ponds and streams, but maybe found along roads, and edges of fields.”

Tell students, “Poison Hemlock prefers to grow in wet soil, but can survive in dry soil.”

Tell students, “Animals have often eaten poison hemlock and have died within hours. (Let students respond or ask questions if needed.)

Tell students, “It is important to know what poison hemlock looks likes so you don’t feed it to animals and to not let them eat it in the pasture.”
