Renaissance Hall of Fame Oral Presentation and Written Report

Introduction

The word “Renaissance” is a French word that means “rebirth”. From the early 14th century to the late 16th century, a revival of interest in the values and arts of Greece and Rome led to a golden age of cultural achievement and innovation. This Renaissance transformed Western European life.

During the Renaissance, The Western European world image shifted from a religious view to a worldly outlook. Renaissance intellectuals had a growing confidence in the individual human spirit and human abilities. This new focus on personal worth of the individual is called “humanism”.

Task

Your assignment will be to research one of the famous Renaissance intellectuals, answer the designated questions, write a report, and convey the information in an oral presentation.

Audience

Your audience is your classmates and myself.

Purpose

The purpose of this report and presentation is to demonstrate student knowledge and comprehension of the achievements of some great Renaissance artists, scientists, writers, political and religious figures and explorers and their contributions to modern history.

Gathering information-

After you have picked a leading figure of the Renaissance from the list provided, you will use the research guide and answer the questions, plus take notes on the person’s accomplishments and impact.

Research Guide:

1.  Person’s Name

2.  Where was this person born (Country and City)?

3.  Where did they grow up?

4.  Where did this person go to school? What did they study?

5.  If they did not attend school, what did they do instead?

6.  What is this person remembered for?

7.  How did this person represent the spirit of the Renaissance?

8.  What impact did his/her ideas, art, discovery, written work and or actions have on history?

9.  Write a bibliography for your sources. You must have a minimum of two sources.

ARTIST - FOCUS QUESTIONS:

What are the characteristics of your work? How does your art or building (painting, culture, architecture) differ from Medieval art or building? How does your work reflect the society you lived in or shape society that came after?

WRITER - FOCUS QUESTIONS:

What did you write about and why? How does your writing differ from medieval literature? Who does your writing influence? Does your work shape society?

SCIENTIST & INVENTOR - FOCUS QUESTIONS:

What was your discovery/invention? How original is your work? Did a previous discovery contribute to yours? What personal sacrifices did you make to achieve your goals? How has your scientific discovery changed man's view of the world?

POLITICAL FIGURE- FOCUS QUESTIONS:

What important events took place during your reign? How did your rule change your kingdom? How did you believe governments should govern their people?

RELIGIOUS FIGURE - FOCUS QUESTIONS:

Reformers: What did you view to be wrong with the Catholic Church? What did you do to change it? What impact did your ideas and action have on history?

Popes: How did you attain the Papacy? What did you accomplish in the Catholic Church? How did you use your position in the Catholic Church?

EXPLORER - FOCUS QUESTIONS:

What was your role in the Age of Exploration? What important journeys did you make? What did you discover? What impact did your exploration have on the places you traveled to? What was your influence on history?

Note: During student presentations, you will be required to take notes on all presentations. From the presentations given by your classmates, I will choose 3 individuals for whom you will answer question 8.

Write a 2 page report that specifically

Make sure to Describe the impact of the individual

· Uses at least 2 sources

·  Includes a bibliography with your paper

·  Paper must be typed or presented in blue or black ink.

·  Cover Page with the proper heading with 3 color illustrations

·  Report and Presentation due Monday, April 21st
