Ludwig Sennfl

(c.1490 – 1543)

A workshop for singers & instruments (A440)

Tutor: David Hatcher

David Hatcher is no doubt well known to many MEMF members, both as a performer on cello and viol, and as a tutor. As well as his own ensemble, Harmonie Universelle, he has played with groups like the New London Consort, Fretwork, and the Consort of Musicke and has accompanied Emma Kirkby, Evelyn Tubb, Catherine Bott among others. He has a high reputation as a tutor, though this is his first visit to MEMF, at any rate recently.

“Senfl’s music forms both the climax to the old German music of the end of the Middle Ages and a highpoint of the new styles at the beginning of the Reformation” (Grove). His style spans the court, the church and domestic life. Although Swiss by birth, he spent his career mainly in Austria and Germany, with some time in Italy. He was influenced by his teacher Isaac, and by Josquin, and was highly regarded as a composer – by Luther among many other contemporaries. He achieved a considerable musical output, including many German songs, but his church music was in Latin. Kathleen Berg has published a detailed appraisal of Sennfl, ‘The Swiss Orpheus’ with an anthology containing much of his music – see One ‘n’ or two in Sennfl? Often spelled with one, but Kathleen reckons the man himself preferred two.

This workshop will be centred on Sennfl’s six part Ave Maria, with instruments doubling the voices. As well as singers, the forces we can use are: crumhorns, sackbuts, low (tenor) shawms, curtals, cornets, recorders, viols.
