Gaelscoil Chaladh an Treoigh: Congratulations to the pupils & staff of Gaelscoil Chaladh an Treoigh who were recently awarded their Fifth Green Flag for biodiversity recently. Pupils from Rang VI & staff travelled to Cork recently for the Awards Ceremony. The Green Schools programme is part of an international environmental education programme and award scheme that promotes and acknowledges long-term, whole-school action for the environment. The school is actively involved in this programme, since 2002. Our Green Team comprising of pupils and teachers are working hard to highlight the importance of biodiversity, how it impacts on our daily lives and how we can help protect it. We will be learning how to improve and preserve our local biodiversity in our school garden and at home through workshops and lessons. We have created new habitats by planting wildflowers to attract bees and hanging a nesting box for birds, creating wood piles for insects and leaf piles for hibernating animals. We look forward to adding more habitats to our garden and using these to learn more about our native trees, plants and animals as well as the various threats to biodiversity and what we can do to help protect it.

Boher Community Development Association: Boher was buzzing over the June bank holiday weekend due to the packed schedule of events organised by the Boher Community Development Association, for their gathering weekend. On Saturday evening, the largest number of cyclists ever, congregated at Boher Community Centre to raise funds for Cliona’s Foundation, in memory of Ciara McCarthy. Over 130 cyclists left the community centre on a 33k cycle. Over €5k was raised on the night with more money pledged. This exceeded all expectations. Boher Community Development Association extends a very special thanks to all who participated in the charity cycle and in particular the volunteers, stewards, marshals and the Gardaí in Caherconlish, Cappamore and Murroe.
