CYCLE INDUSTRY IN GAINSBOROUGH

During the 19th Century several Gainsborough men were experimenting - as were men all over the country – with cycle or cycle like machines, and in 1842 a tricycle driven by Hand levers and steered by the feet was built by an employee of a local coach Building firm.

If he could have reversed the processes he might have had a winner! Then in 1868 another Coach Builder Richard Hammond, built a Velocipede said by some to have been the first pedal and crank machine constructed in England. About 1880 a short lived venture for the manufacture of Globe Cycles was begun and shortly afterwards Baines Brothers began to an interest in cycles and cycling. They built a number of machines including a tandem in 1888 and a Ladies safety cycle in 1889. These were years of great cycling interest and a town cycling club was formed in 1880s.

By 1894 Baines Brothers were styling themselves cycle engineers and manufacturer and in 1897 they formed a company for cycle manufacture and built the North Street Factory. They built there AEGRE Cycles on a commercial scale 600 being made in there peek year. There was then a slump and disagreement among shareholders so the Venture ended in 1901. The firm had been progressive in outlook and methods. Building up an Export trade to India and Africa which Edward Baines desired – making components rather than complete machines maybe Gainsborough could have become the heart of Cycle Manufacturing Industry

There was another cycle making venture in Bridge Street opposite Whitton’s Mill from about 1898 – 1910. The Pattison Brothers making their TRENTON Cycles with a peak output of 400 machines in 1899.

WHAT OF THE AEGIR?

This, name, the Aegir, for what does it stand?

That the Viking brought from another land.

When the Gaini tribe sailed up the Trent

They knew what the moods of the sea god meant.

“Ware Aegir” they’d call in their foreign tongue

As the long ships heaved, and to oars they clung

With norse tenacity and little more

They rode Trents wave on to Lindums shore

So a slice of history survives the test

Of time, on our clubs training top and vest

With two little bands on royal blue

And “Aegir” emblazoned proud and true

Proud of what, did I hear you ask?

Well, are’nt you proud and pleased to bask

In your clubmates loyalty? No small prize,

As a rock of truth in a world of lies . . .
