ScenarioYou are a trainee in the Quality Control/Inspection Department of an engineering company that is sub contracted to manufacture a range of precision components for both one off and mass production. It is approaching the end of your training period, and you are required to complete the following tasks to demonstrate you have gained the necessary skills to become part of the established quality control team.
Assignment title / Assignment 3 Use of Comparators and Gauge Design
Task 1For this task, your tutor will provide you with a Toolmakers Clamp Jaw and a range of measuring equipment. You are required to select the appropriate equipment and check the component to ensure that it meets the specification on the drawing, i.e. angular and linear measurements are within specified tolerance. You need to record your measurements in the table provided along with the equipment used; you are also required to show any formulas and calculations that may be required. P6
Task 2 The attached drawing shows a hydraulic pump idler gear, using the information provided on the drawing and the appropriate charts you are required to complete the following:
a)Calculate the Limits of size for the journals.
b)Use Taylor’s Principle of Gauging to design a simple Go No-Go Gauge to check the journal for size.
c)Produce fully dimensioned drawings of your gauge design including limits of size for Go and No-Go elements and wear limit (all calculations for Go and No-Go elements need to be shown). P7
Task 3Compareand contrast the different useof comparators when used to measure dimensional accuracy, for example when performing linear and angular measurement, different equipment used such as D.T.I.’s and how they are set, cosine errors, accuracy achieved etc. M2
Task 4Analyse the calibration requirements of comparators and measuring equipment, this should include the following:
A)Ratio of accuracy between instrument being calibrated and calibration equipment used.
B)Type of environment required for accurate calibration.
C) Different types of materials for calibration equipment.
D) Different grades and accuracy of slip gauges.
E) Care of comparators e.g. wringing etc. D2
