RE: Summer Reading

DATE: June 1, 2017

The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn,

the more places you’ll go.” Dr. Seuss, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!

Let’s consider Dr. Seuss’ words of wisdom and continue to read and learn this summer! I hope you will partner with me in motivating our children to read by providing them with books, engaging in conversation about the text, and encouraging them to talk about their books with their friends!

To achieve this reading and learning mission, providing children with access to one novel and regular visits to the Brentwood Public Library will help maintain enrichment throughout the summer months. Our ELA teachers have worked diligently to support your child’s reading growth throughout the year, let’s not let that critical progress slip away over the summer! Please encourage your child to read the book listed below, complete the assignment, and return to school with the book AND the assignment (see other side)on the first day of school for credit towards the first marking quarter grade. We ask that childrennot write in the book, rather, we encourage children to use post-it notes to actively engage with the novel. The books for each “entering” grade are listed below as follows:

Summer Reading Titles:

  • Entering Grade 6: The Fighting Ground by Avi
  • Entering Grade 7: My Brother Sam is Dead by Christopher Collier.
  • Entering Grade 8: Friedrich by Hans Peter Richter

Note: Our teachers are planning some extra special activities the first week of school based on the content of the book.

A second opportunity for you and your child to find additional summer reading will be after school on June 23rd, in the Anthony Felicio Administration Assembly Hall for our Books-To-Home Book Drive! Hope to see you there!

Thank you for your encouragement and support in our daily efforts to help all children reach their full potential. Working together we will help all children read, achieve, and succeed. Have a wonderful summer vacation!
