GREEN REFORM IN IRAN (06/12/2009)

Iran had her latest Presidential election on 6/10/2009. Incumbent Mr. Ahmadinejad won by 2/3 majority over the runner up Mr. Mir Hossein Mosavi. People did not agree with the result and millions of people came out to the streets to object to the election of Mr. Ahmadinejad. Demonstration was green and peaceful for a few days. Then the supreme leader Mr. Khamenei came out in support of the election result and support of Mr. Ahmadinejad, then the police and basiji’s tried to suppress the demonstration and many people were shot and killed including a young lady Neda Agha Soltan who was shot in the chest in front of the camera. Government said they suppressed the velvet revolution. Mr. Khatami called it velvet coupdetat, Mr. Mosavi promised to continue his demand for reform in a peaceful ways. While we support civil society, rule of law, human right and democratic process we like to emphasis that democracy is a learning process, it is a slow process and it takes time.Let me give you a few examples:

1. United States the shining example of civil society freedom and democracy for the last 200 years, but the first 150 years women and blacks were excluded from the democracy. Over the last few decades women were given the right to vote in 1920 andblacks with the leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were able to eliminate partite or idea of separate but equal and replace it with true democracy since 1960 and topped it with the election of President Obama in 2008 with mixed race, religion and national origin/ we are proud to be Muslim-American.

2. Turkey was ruled by military dictators for 40 years since 1920, slowly people changed it and for the last 20 years Turkey is an example of democracy in progress. Now Prime Minister is a practicing Muslim and his wife wears hejab and head cover, but Turkey’s congress does not allow women with hejab to enter congress or universities. Sounds unreasonable but Turkish people must resolve it slowly by education and voting process.

There are many other examples that proves that we must ask for: civil society, human rights, and democratic process, but freedom comes very slowly and only if we strive for it and know its value and are willing to pay for it with our resources and our lives.

What can we do to help Green Reform in Iran?

  1. Let us keep the green reform alive by wearing either a green wrist band, necktie, head cover, etc.
  2. Let us form a green political party, internet based, $100/year membership fee and yearly free and democratic election outside Iran by electronic voting. If we can not organize and practice democracy outside Iran, how can we expect that students inside Iran can exercise their right with so much pressure and violence.
  3. If we attract 100,000 members, we can raise $10 million per year and we can own T.V. station, radio, newspaper, and a solid organization free and democratic.
  4. We need few solid leaders, anyone who is Iranian and wants freedom, independence, human right, and democratic republic for Iran can join. We must not bring up dividing topics like: separation of church and state, special lion and sun on the flag, our approach is non-violent and peaceful reform just like Martin Luther King’s movement of 60’s and 70’s, please stop saying death to ______, just say Long live ______.
  5. Please sing up with ICBH free for Green Reform Party, as soon as we collect 1000 names we will go public.
  6. We encourage our youth to join this reform, we will notify U.S. Congress and Senators and United Nation as soon as we get 1000 members.
  7. Trust worthy Spiritual leaders of this green reform inside Iran are Dr. Shirin Ebadi and Dr. Abdulkarim Soroush, the political leaders are Mr. M.H. Mosavi, and Mr. M. Khatemi, and the spiritual leaders outside Iran are Mr. A.A. Bazargan, Mr. H. Entezam and Mr. A. Naraghi. Please visit ICBH.org for their link.
