Five Summer Residential Advisors (RAs) are needed at UH-Manoa for Windward Upward Bound’s Summer Program 2010.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Under the supervision and guidance of the Upward Bound Guidance Advisor, summer residential advisors will be responsible for the supervision, mentoring, academic support, and evening activities of 42 Upward Bound high school students during our six-week summer residential program. RAs counsel students, lead hobby clubs, plan games, oversee student committees, and tutor, among other duties.

QUALIFICATIONS: College student with successful completion of 48 credits in good academic standing. We prefer RAs with backgrounds similar to that of Upward Bound participants (low-income family and first-generation college student). Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with high school students and strong communication skills are required. We prefer one or more semesters working with high school youth. Tutoring experience is an asset.

DUTY PERIOD: Resident Advisors live with Upward Bound students near UH-Manoa (Kalo Terrace) and must sleep over Sunday through Thursday nights. See chart below:

Program Description:

Upward Bound is a year-round, pre-college TRiO Program funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Upward Bound is designed to generate in high school students the skills and motivation necessary for success in education beyond secondary school. Student admission into Upward Bound is a privilege and is based upon grades, character, attitude, and academic goals. All participants are high school students from low-income families and families where parents have not earned bachelor’s degrees. Students attend Castle, Kahuku, Kailua, or Kalaheo High Schools.
