Organizer: IEEE Circuits and Systems Society, Singapore Chapter

Sponsor: IEEE Circuits and Systems Society (CASS Outreach Initiative)

Date: 29-30 September, and 16 August

Venue: Executive Seminar Room @ Nanyang Technological University (NTU) & Omni Theater @ Science Centre

IEEE Circuits and Systems Society (CASS), Singapore Chapter, conducted a series of events to promote the IEEE CASS under the CASS Outreach Initiative 2014.

1.  A 2-day event, comprising a Tutorial Workshop and a Graduate Students Workshop, was held on 29 and30 September 2014 from 9.00am to 4.30pm at the Executive Seminar Room in NTU.

The Tutorial Workshop on “High Performance Embedded System Implementation for Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Applications” was organized to provide theoretical background along with hands on training on implementation of DSP algorithms. Six sub-sessions (4 tutorial presentations, 1 hands-on session, and 1 industry talk) were conducted. The topics included the following:

§  DSP Fundamentals, Complexity and Performance Considerations

§  Efficient Techniques for Multiplying with Constants in DSP Applications

§  Understand ASIC Synthesis – A Means to Implement High Performance Low Power DSP Processors

§  Mapping Algorithms to Architecture for DSP Applications

§  DSP FPGA hands-on Session Starting from Fundamentals (Hands-on)

§  Industry Talk (career advice)

The Graduate Students Workshop was organized to create a forum for graduate students from Singapore universities to exchange their research findings and ideas, and to provide a networking session for students and professors in Singapore. Twelve students presented their research work. Two best presenters were awarded based on the research quality and presentation skills.

The 2-day event attracted 102 participants. On average, there were about 40 audiences for each sub-session (6 sessions in the Tutorial Workshop and 1 session in the Graduates Student Workshop). 30 free IEEE/CASS memberships were given to the student speakers and some student participants.

2.  A social event to visit to Omni theatre @ Science Centre was organized on 16 Aug 2014, from 11.30am to 1.30 pm.

38 members and their families gathered and watched an IMAX 3D movie “Animalopolis”.
