General Manager- Shipyard Operations & Repair

Signet Maritime Corporation is seeking an experience General Manager, to manage, lead and oversee all aspects of daily operations for all manufacturing, manufacturing support and administrative functions needed to support shipyard operations. Responsibilities include, project execution including maintaining quality standards, cost effectiveness and time management to ensure projects are on time and within budget. Ensures compliance with all Safety, Quality, Company and Regulatory directives; directs activities in areas of safety and personnel, production, scheduling, material handling, and quality.
Essential Functions:
1. Provides supervision to shipyard managers, supervisors and foremen.
2. Develops departmental plans, including business, production and/or organizational priorities and established shipyard goals.
3. Develops and maintains annual budgets.
4. Directs activities in areas of safety and personnel, production, scheduling, material handling and quality and ensures compliance with all Safety, Quality, Company and Regulatory directives in conjunction with Manager, HSSEQ.
5. Apply knowledge of marine engineering principles as applicable to vessel design, new construction and repairs of ships and ships system.
6. Review and interpret designs, drawings & specifications, recommend changes to plans and specifications to meet actual vessel conditions.
7. Directs and coordinates shipyard operations within company policies and procedures.
8. Responsible and accountable for the performance of craft supervisors, technicians, and line staff for safety, quality, cost, and scheduling.
9. Responsible for providing the quantity and quality of workers to meet schedule and budget. With assistance of Senior Manager, trains assigned craft supervisors in safety, cost control, job skills, quality and scheduling.
10. Directs all phases of steel fabrication, assembly and erection, piping fabrication and installation, electrical systems fabrication and installation, painting and outfitting including the work. performed by outside contractors. Monitors the performance of assigned supervisors.
11. In conjunction with the Senior Manager, maintains appropriate interface and relations with customers, paying detailed attention to contracts and specifications.
12. Translates company strategies into tactical plans. Creates and prioritizes necessary resources and steps required to accomplish goals on time.
13. Establishes all shift production schedules.
14. Establishes and maintains shipyard production goals to ensure production schedules are met.
15. Confers with Management Team to ensure coordination of purchasing, production and shipping and approves all requisitions and invoices for operating materials.
16. Schedules and conducts shipyard meetings in conjunction with Manager and Staff.
17. Advises Management Team regarding manning and expense goals and ensures efforts are made to meet budget projections.
18. Determines plant improvements and repairs along with annual costs and schedules.
19. Designs, manages and executes policies to deliver business strategy.
20. Ensures product quality control goals are met and maintained for shipyard.
21. Oversees development of manufacturing processes and equipment for new products.
22. Ensures accurate, complete records are maintained.
23. In conjunction with Human Resources, maintains employee certifications to insure all training and qualification documentation is timely and accurate.
24. Maintains a clean and safe shipyard.
25. Fosters a well-trained and motivated staff.
Experience and Qualifications:
1. Minimum 10 years’ experience as a shipyard manager or other management level responsibilities in a shipyard environment.
2. MUST have B.S. (Bachelor’s Degree) from an accredited university/college – Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering or similar qualification with a strong technical background. Maritime Academy preferred.
3. In depth knowledge of all business functions associated with shipyard management.
4. Ability to understand and administer ABS Classification guidelines, USCG and SOLAS requirements.
5. Ability to apply Continuous Improvement strategies across all functions, which includes the ability to introduce needed change, create excitement for change and lead change initiatives.
6. Must be adaptable and open to new ideas.
7. Ability to refine communication skills based on audience, use active listening skills and non-verbal rapport building skills and effectively communicate message to both small and large groups.
8. Ability to make quick decisions. Must be able to gain input from many different people and use a participative decision-making approach when appropriate.
9. Ability to establish clear and consistent expectations and follow up on critical tasks and hold people accountable in a tough, but fair manner.
10. Ability to motivate and connect with people with a sense of enthusiasm, passion and commitment for their work and encourage them to do their best.
11. Ability to analyze situations, react quickly, work collaboratively, apply good judgment and maintain composure in high pressure situations. Able to anticipate future events based on past experiences and work to get ahead of impending issues.
12. Considerable knowledge in all areas of shipbuilding and repair, material handling, labor, safety and product related state and federal regulations and practices.
13. Experience with Profit and Loss and general Accounting practices.
