DENTAL HYGIENE PROGRAM

DEH 2702C COMMUNITY DENTAL HEALTH EDUCATION

Course Description: (Credit hours: 3 credit hours. Two hours class and three hours of laboratory per week).(A.S.) Prerequisites: satisfactory completion of or concurrent enrollment in ENC 1101 and SYG 2000. Corequisites: DEH 2804C. This course introduces the student to public health and the responsibilities of the dental hygienist in the promotion of oral health education in the community. Content will include basic concepts of education and community dental health, history and trends in public health, principles of communication, dental epidemiology and indices, needs assessment, biostatistics, literature review, community organizations, and the dental care delivery system. Also the planning, implementation and evaluation of dental health programs and community service projects will be included.

Performance Standards:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Identify alternative career and community practice settings in dental hygiene.

2.  Identify dental treatment needs, demands and utilization of dental services according to various populations.

3.  Identify and describe dental public health activities related to prevention and control of disease and the promotion of health.

4.  Discuss current trends in the provision and financing of dental care.

5.  Describe current epidemiological treads of oral disease, including dental caries, periodontal disease and oral cancer.

6.  Identify research methodologies used in studies related to oral health, biostatistics and indices.

7.  Describe current ethics and jurisprudence in dental hygiene practice.

8.  Demonstrate the principles of dental pubic health and the role of the dental hygienists in providing community dental care, by developing the skills appropriate to the assessing, planning, implementing and assessing community dental health programs.

9.  Assist other health professionals in providing dental hygiene services to underserved groups.

10.  Describe the strategies and approaches that improve cross-cultural communication and education in oral health care settings.
