K-W-O Chart (B-2)
DIRECTIONS: Determine a specific area of focus for the support provider’s observation of your classroom. Reflect on current practice and indicate:
1. What I know about my classroom practice
2. What I want to know about my classroom practice
3. What I would like my support provider to observe
K-W-O ChartWhat I know about my classroom practice
(e.g., I create an environment of respect; students understand the routines and procedures in my class, etc.)
Based on the reflection on my current practice, I know that my students understand the routines and procedures I have established in my classroom. On a typical day, students know to get out their homework and begin their warm-up, even if they have not yet been instructed to do so. I also know that my students understand the classroom rules and what is expected of them. Because of these rules and expectations, I know that my students realize that my classroom is a place to give and receive respect. For this reason, I know that my students feel safe and cared for in my class.
What I want to know about my classroom practice
(e.g., Effective strategies to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of my EL students, etc.)
Based on the reflection of my current practice, I want to know how to meet the needs of all of my students ranging from English Learners to GATE students, and everyone in between. This particular group of students is a very quiet, reserved bunch. Because of this, I sometimes feel like this class is bored. I want to know what I can do to change this. Based on assessments, I know that these students are learning in my classroom, but I want to make sure that they are enjoying themselves and are stimulated too.
What I would like my support provider to observe
(e.g., Evidence of how I check for understanding; how my lesson design meets the needs of my EL students, etc.)
Based on the reflection of my current practice, I want you to observe the praise and encouragement I give to my students. I think that positive reinforcement is imperative for people of any age, and I want my students to be proud of the work they do and be acknowledged for their effort. Because I don't want any of my students to feel embarassed by making mistakes or being wrong, I try to give all of my kids the opportunity to feel successful in the classroom. I would also like you to observe whether or not I am checking for understanding as effectively as possible. With as many students as I see in a day, I never feel like I have enough time to work with students one-on-one as much as I'd like to. Finally, I would like you to observe the way I communicate information to my students in an effort to determine if I am teaching them at a level that they understand. I don't want to talk down to my students, but I do want to make sure that all of them, including my English Learners, are fully aware of the message I am attempting to get across.
