Homework Solution Guidelines

1. Neat

Each solution must be either typed or neatly hand written. If your work is too messy to turn in to your future boss or customer then it is too messy to turn in to me.

2. Explain Your Work

Your solution logic must be clear and explicit. If you are using the principle of conservation of linear momentum on the 4th line of your solution then above the line say “by conservation of linear momentum we have …” If you are just rearranging an equation using algebra on lines 4 through 7 then just above line 4 say “using algebra we obtain…” When evaluating integrals, you may use a math handbook or calculator to obtain the formula for the integral rather than integrating by parts, etc. If you do this, you must specify the book, page, and equation number of the integral identity that you are using. You also must show the evaluation of the limits explicitly.

3. Name, Number, and Date

You are to number each page in the top Right Hand Corner as well as placing your name and datein the top Left Hand Corner.

4. On Time

You are to submit your homework to your campus facilitator or fax it to me by the deadline unless you have received special permission from your instructor in advance. In the case of an accident or other emergency, you should contact either your instructor or campus facilitator as quickly as possible. Homework submitted after the deadline but before the next class period or before I post the solution will be accepted for reduced credit. Once I post the solution, no credit will be given for late work.

5. Computer Solutions (Maple, Mathmatica, etc.)

Unless I specifically state otherwise on a problem, I expect your solution to be done by hand. I will not accept statements like “using maple” as part of a solution. The problems chosen are not of sufficient complexity to require these tools and I am working to improve your thinking and math skills. You are always free to use these programs to check your work, but I will grand your hand work and not the work of the program. If student abuse of these programs becomes a problem then I can easily increase the difficulty of the problems so that computer analysis is essential to having any chance of solving the homework problems.
