Dear Parents, August 3, 2015

We are looking forward to a wonderful start to the new school year, and we are excited to work with our students this year. The MERIT mission statement declares that students will have access to stimulating learning experiences both inside and outside of the classroom. We are excited about our outside learning opportunities this fall! Beginning in September, your student will have the opportunity to participate in at least four field trips that will further enhance their knowledge in all academic areas. A description of each trip is written below.

In order to make these trips more cost effective, we have combined all trips into one package. The cost will be $65.00 for the trips and a Zulu t-shirt that students wear to each location. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to experience learning outside the classroom.

We are asking that each student bring in $65 in cash or check made payable to TCMS no later than August 20th to his/her homeroom teacher. Also, please circle the t-shirt size for your child and sign the below statement granting permission for your child to attend each of these field trips. Return this form with your child; your child may not attend the trips without this signed permission form and field trip payment.

Size: YL AS AM AL AXL AXXL

Fall Field Trips

September 14th: Flamenco Ballet - We will travel to Valdosta to watch a performance by a Hispanic ballet company. The students will be introduced to various Spanish dance forms including the tango, merengue, salsa, cumbia, and flamenco art forms. This field trip is a great way for our students to meet our (CCC) standards - communities, connections, and culture.

October 16th: We will tour the campus of Valdosta State University and conduct research in the media center on campus. Touring the campus will be a wonderful opportunity for our students to begin looking toward their futures, and researching in the media center will meet research needs for Language Arts and for the National History Day project for our Honors Georgia History students.

October 30th: We will travel to the Farley Nuclear Power Plant near Dothan, Alabama to discover how nuclear energy is generated. Students will also learn about nuclear energy safety and about the careers available in the field of Nuclear Power. This trip ties into our Energy and Its Transformations unit.

November 17th: This semester, Honors Georgia History students will be conducting research and preparing a project for the National History Day contest and all students will be studying the Civil War. Students are also learning about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) this year. In order to assist students with this learning, the students will be visiting the Thomas County Museum of History and a local industry on Tuesday, November 17th from 8:15am – 1:30pm. At the museums, students will learn about the Civil War, Thomasville, Georgia, and American history. The students will tour the local industry to learn about STEM and its applications in the real world.
