Kearsarge Magazine Announces Good Citizen Award Winners

Grantham, NH — February 6, 2006 —Kearsarge Magazine announces the first annual Good Citizen Award Winners.

Good Citizens are the people, organizations or businesses that have given back to the community. “There are so many people doing great things for their community — we could have easily dedicated an entire issue to Good Citizens,” says Laura Jean Whitcomb, editor of Kearsarge Magazine. “Our hope that this award will become an annual event, honoring those who make their hometowns a better place to live.”

Residents from Grantham to Warner nominated a variety of people who have shown true kindness to their community, and the Kearsarge Magazine staff chose seven finalists and two honorable mentions:

  • Linda Brenner, New London — owner, Woodcrest Village, and CEO, Terrace Communities
  • Courtland (Court) Cross, New London — vice chairman, Board of the Lake Sunapee Region Visiting Nurse Association
  • Adele Furdyna, Grantham — member of Grantham Conservation Commission, Grantham Garden Club and Eastman Woodlands & Wildlife Committee, and New Hampshire Master Gardener and New Hampshire Tree Steward

Corey McGrath, Georges Mills — Sunapee High School student and founder of the Lake Sunapee Rock Bass Derby

Joy Nowell, Newbury — chairperson, Newbury Beautification Committee

  • Jane Slayton, Andover — principal, Andover Elementary/Middle School
  • Patryc Wiggins, Guild — founder, Guild Institute
  • Honorable mentions: Chelsea Graf, Danbury resident, Newfound Regional High School student, March of Dimes Ambassador and organizer of a Katrina fundraiser that raised $25,000; and Charles (Bud) Thompson, Warner resident and founder of Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum

Good Citizens are profiled in the spring 2006 issue of Kearsarge Magazine, which will be on stands Feb. 15, 2006. “We’re hoping that you, too, will be inspired by the works of these individuals, and want to dedicate whatever spare time (or spare change) you have to a community project,” says Whitcomb.
