Badische Weinstrasse celebrates its 60th anniversary

Explore the Baden wines of the Black Forest region

The wine-growing country “Baden” is one of Germany’s largest wine-growing areas. The “Badische Weinstrasse” (Baden Wine Route) snakes its way for over 200 kilometres through Baden’s most beautiful wine-growing regions. It winds through picturesque wine-making villages, little half-timbered towns and vineyards between the Black Forest and the Rhine, in the south-west of Germany. The popular wine route is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2014, including large numbers of attractions and events in the spring.

The “Badische Weinstrasse” is often known as “Baden’s gourmet route” thanks to its village inns and regional specialities, from asparagus to bacon.

To celebrate its anniversary, the holiday route is to be extended through the Kraichgau region, via Karlsruhe and Heidelberg, as far as the “Badische Bergstrasse” (Baden Mountain Route) from spring 2014. Drivers will then be able to enjoy over 500 kilometres of “Badische Weinstrasse”. The classic wine road leads from Baden-Baden on the edge of the Black Forest, around a loop taking in Kaiserstuhl and Tuniberg, to Weil am Rhein.

Over 150 events and campaigns are planned in the nine wine-growing areas in the Baden wine region in May alone. Most will be held in the Black Forest wine-growing regions of Ortenau, Breisgau, Kaiserstuhl, Tuniberg and Markgräflerland. The events on offer during the many “Erlebniswochenenden” (wine experience weekends) include wine tastings and wine cellar tours, cosy vineyard celebrations, lively wine festivals and gourmet wine walks. A vintage bus will take wine connoisseurs on tours of the Markgräflerland and Kaiserstuhl. The “Rebenbummler” and “Wein-Express Chanderli” combine train rides in historic carriages with wine tasting. More energetic wine fans can tour the vineyards by Segway or pedelec.

The Black Forest Tourist Board LTD (Schwarzwald Tourismus GmbH) has published a programme containing all the events. There is also a new “Wein-Erlebniskarte Badische Weinstraße” map. Both items (in German) are available free from Schwarzwald Tourismus GmbH, Habsburgerstr. 132, 79104 D-Freiburg, Tel. +49 761.89646-0, . More information at www.badische-weinstrasse.de
