COURSE DESCRIPTION
This 8-week summer course in designed for non-native speakers who have completed 3 semesters of French (Intermediate level).
French Culture and Conversation II (3 points):
This course is taught as a culture and conversation course to develop all the skills needed to practice French in immersion. The course has a cultural theme: The three legendary areas of Paris (Montmartre, Montparnasse and St. Germain-des-Prés) that have served as the intellectual, artistic and festive centers of the city during a century bookended by two revolutions – 1871 and 1968.
The goal of this course is to take advantage of the opportunity to live and practice French in an exceptional cultural and artistic environment. A third of the course will take place outside of the classroom interacting with people, using the language and studying the culture. Students will spend time in the classroom preparing for their excursions by studying texts, documentaries, short movies, songs, poems, pamphlets, drawings and paintings. Students will work on pronunciation and prosody during classes. There will be two theater workshops. Students will undertake personal research projects that involve interviews, observations and personal interactions with a Parisian artist of their choice. Around Bastille Day, there will also be a three-day trip outside of Paris.
During the first unit, we will study daily Parisian life between 1871 and 1918 in MONTMARTRE. Some of the subjects we will cover include cabaret life, music, songs,poetry and the birth of cubism .
The second unit will be organized around MONTPARNASSE. Students will familiarize themselves with the various intellectual movements of the period “les années folles” (1920-1929). We will tour famous cafés where intellectuals went to meet and promoted Dadaïsm and Surrealism.
The third unit will take us to ST-GERMAIN-DES-PRES (1930-1968), where cafes once again were the meeting place of writers and intellectuals who founded “Existentialisme”and “théâtre de l’absurde”. This period also included the birth of “Nouvelle Vague” cinema and the yéyé years of music. The unit will conclude with the Student Revolution in 1968.

• Tell a story or narrate an event.

• Express personal feelings and opinions.
Listening
• Understand extended oral presentations in class (10 minute speeches, monologs, press reviews, or analysis of audio and video extracts).
• Take notes while watching short extracts of documentaries and produce a cohesive summary.

COURSE POLICIES AND EXPECTATIONS
Attendance to this class is essentialand mandatory. In-class work is based on active participation, individually and collectively. During the excursions, movie screenings and workshops there will be active discussions in French and students are expected to participate. Students may only be absent once. Any consecutive absence will impact the final grade.
The course instructor will be with students throughout the course, including during most excursions and during the three-day trip. Students are expected to only speak French during the course.
ASSIGNMENTS
Weekly assignments will amount to approximately 10.5 hours, although the amount of time necessary to cover the material in a foreign language highly depends oneach student's pace.
Readings
Assignments will include:
- historical documents such as newspapers and gazette articles of the period studied, literature excerpts, contemporary newspapers articles etc.
- vocabulary list preparation.
- research toward the final project
Screenings
Students will sometimes be asked to screen films individually: a list of relevant movies will be available,while interviews, short movies or INA archives documentaries will be assigned weekly.
Listenings
Radio interviews, documentaries (France culture) and broadcasts will be assigned weekly, with or without transcription, with comprehension questions.
Students will be required to take notes during classmates final presentations.
Speaking
Students will be asked to report weekly about their Paris visits and discoveries via the class blog. They will report to the class every day about their exposure to the language and the culture (rapport d'étonnement).
They will be required to practice phonetics chapter from the course manual daily (recordings)
The final project is a 10 minute structured oral presentation on a chosen topic related to the course which will require practice (reading the presentation is not allowed)

Listening comprehension
Each class will focus on developing listening comprehension by studying audio-visual material.
Speaking
This class is designed to foster oral interaction in French at all times. Personal assignments will include street interviews with French people, in-class discussion and participation and an interview with an artist.
TESTS AND EXAMS
There will be a semester and a final exam for this class. Participation will be graded on an on going process.
GRADING
Participation in class/ participation during excursions/ progression : 30 %
Mid semester exam : 30 %
Final personal project: 40 %
