SUGGESTED PREPARATION

MATHEMATICS ASSESSMENT

2018

You will have 2 hours to complete the paper and it is worth 80 marks

The object of the paper is to test if you have a good working knowledge of the basics of school mathematics and can perform routine and other procedures.

The work to be covered is the current core syllabus prescribed for grades 10 to 12 – the assessment questions will be based on a combination of any topics in FET mathematics. You will be provided with a formula sheet, but make sure you revise your work.

It is important to work neatly and show your working clearly in a way you would teach it to pupils.

It is suggested that you obtain current Grades 10 – 12 textbooks to help you refresh your knowledge of the syllabus as outlined below:

The outline of the syllabus is:

ALGEBRA:

·  The number system

·  Working with variables

·  Simplifying expressions

·  Factorizing

·  Working with exponents

·  Solving equations: linear; quadratic; inequalities; simultaneous, exponential and logarithmic

·  Functions: the graphs of the straight linear, hyperbola; parabola; circle; trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic.

CALCULUS:

·  Differentiating from first principles

·  The rules of differentiation.

·  Solving real-life problems using calculus.

TRIGONOMETRY:

·  The basic trig ratios including special angles

·  Working with trig ratios 0⁰ to 360⁰

·  Simplifying trig expressions

·  Finding lengths and angles in right-angled triangles

·  Trig graphs

MENSURATION

·  Calculation of area, perimeter and volume of regular and compound three dimensional shapes.

·  If complicated formulae are required these will be supplied in the question.

EUCLIDEAN GEOMETRY

·  A knowledge of the basic geometrical facts as pertain to straight lines, triangles, quadrilaterals, ratio and proportion and circles.

·  An ability to reason using the geometric facts, use accepted abbreviations to justify a train of reasoning.

·  No proofs of theorems will be asked.

FINANCIAL MATHEMATICS

·  To demonstrate a knowledge of the basics of simple and compound interest.

PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS

·  A knowledge of the terminology used in statistics

·  The basic formulae used in probability and statistics.

·  No complicated calculations will be asked.

ANALYTICAL (COORDINATE) GEOMETRY

·  The formulae for finding the midpoint, equation, gradient etc. of a straight line.

·  Working with triangles: in-centre, circumcenter etc.

·  The circle.

·  Solving problems or proving geometric facts using analytical geometry.

DO NOT LIMIT YOUR PREPARATION TO THE ABOVE TOPICS
