APRIL 20, 2018 – ISKIGAMIZIGE-GIIZIS – SAP BOILING MOON

Dear Parents/Guardians of students,

Students in grades 3-5 have spent the week practicing for the MCA tests. Starting Monday we will be administering the MCA’s. It is very important for your student to do their very best, the results follow them through their school career. To help them do their best it could be helpful if:

*You talked to them about taking their time and reading through each question carefully;

*making sure they receive a good night’s sleep each night;

*helping them start the day off by having a calm morning;

*and if they do not like the breakfast served at school they should eat breakfast at home.

After students have finished the MCA’s students in Kindergarten through grade 6 will be taking the NWEA and Fastbridge Assessments. They took these tests in the fall, I look forward to see how much all have improved their scores.

Miigwech for your support and good luck test takers!

We have only 5 weeks of school left! Student Attendance continues to be very important these last few weeks, we have assessments being conducted along with other projects that students are working on and remember it is the state law! So let’s finish out the year with the best attendance possible

Boozhoo! Happy Spring!

We are shifting from our Spring Sugarbush right into our Spring Garden Planning! Hard to believe it’s time with all the new snow!

Our school has a 3’ x 90’ container garden to plan and plant. New this year: we are planting for a purpose this year! We will plant beds that will be used for Salsa, Pizza (we are even growing a section of wheat- for our pizza crusts), Soup, Stir Fry, Pickle and Salad Garden. The classrooms are doing the Garden Planning, they are using an online tool at called Design your garden. This is so cool! You can insert how big your garden plot is and drag pictures of the vegetables in each square foot. It automatically will drop in how many of each plant can fit into the square foot garden, and it gives a description of the vegetable with planting tips for each vegetable you use.

*I am also looking for any help with building our drip irrigation system on May 15th which will consist of rain barrels, stands (need to build two stands that are higher than our container garden), and drip hoses. I am planning on working with our 6th grade students on this- hopefully with some help! They can hammer, saw and drill! We have the 4x4 posts for this out back- if you can help please let me know. We will need someone with construction abilities.

Kindergarten news- Ms. Jeana

The students had a fun time at sugarbush! They helped haul wood for the fire where we were boiling sap. Each student chose a maple tree with a tap and bag. Each day the students checked their bag to see how much sap they had collected. After their bag had enough sap, they brought it over to the boiling pan over the fire. Everyone was given a turn stirring while it slowly turned into syrup. The students also participated in making maple candy. They watched Erik boil the syrup down, pour it into candy molds, and each student was able to have a piece. In class, they have been working hard on their science fair project. They are experimenting with making crystals out of borax, salt, and sugar. They are making predictions and drawings every day. Make sure you are reading and practicing their spelling words each night. They will receive a sticker for reading and spelling practice. We are working towards this month’s reading goal of 800 minutes! If we succeed the students get to choose their reward! Please Read!!!

Warm weather is here! So is the mud! Make sure your student comes to school every day with appropriate outdoor gear. If you want them to wear boots make sure they bring them to school.

The school does not have extra rubber boots for students to use.

4th – 6th Class

All of the students have been preparing for the upcoming Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments. We will be starting them on Monday, April 23rd. Therefore, it’s imperative that students are well rested. So, parents please make sure your child/children get to bed early. Fifth graders will also be taking a science test in addition to the reading and math assessments. The end of the year is just around the corner and we will still be assessing students with MAP and FastBridge assessments when the MCAs are completed. Our website lists the various upcoming test dates. Some students are planning on submitting a science experiment for the Science Fair on Thursday, April 26th. If they haven’t already returned their packet please send it in on Monday, April 23rd.
