Expository Writing

Also known as ‘Point-Proof-Comment’, expository writing is a three part process that helps you make an argument. You will use this strategy to write answers to reading response questions as well as the upcoming opinion paragraph writing piece.

Point / In this part you make a statement or claim about your topic. You will decide which side of an issue you want to argue, and state your choice clearly.
Proof / Here, you provide proof for your statement. This should be a quote, fact, or example from the text. This proof should help prove your point and support your argument.
Comment / This is where you comment on how your proof supports your point. Don’t assume your audience will understand your proofs alone. Explain how they prove your point.

Example:

Do you feel the father and son will ever be reconciled? Defend your idea.

The father and son will be reconciled. They both care about each other despite their problems, and this indicates that they will be reunited in the future.

The father cares very deeply about his son. This is shown when he says “I love him so much it hurts”. The son also cares for the father, even though he complains about him. An example of this is when the son says “You should be in your bed. A man of your age. It’s past one”.

Even though they fight, the bond between the father and the son is strong. Everything the father does is because of his love for his son. Even though the son complains and questions his father, he still cares about him. The bond between the father and son will help the characters forgive each other and resolve their problems.
