Training in Pain Medicine – Poole
Pain Medicine is a compulsory unit of training for ST3-4 level. In Wessex this module is only available at Poole & Bournemouth and PortsmouthHospitals.
You can also do higher training in Pain medicine which is similar in terms of time required to complete, with some higher competencies gained. You are required to attend a minimum of 20 sessions to complete higher training in pain medicine.
The rest of this document is specific for Basic training and if you wish to do higher training you should discuss the requirements with the lead educational supervisor for pain medicine.
The lead educational supervisor for this module is Dr Naeem . You must contact him prior to or at the start of your module.
You are expected to attend a minimum of 20 sessions in pain medicine.
These sessions must include at least10 Pain Clinics and 5 pain theatre sessions. The rest of the sessions can be made up with sessions in Acupuncture clinic, Palliative Care and Acute pain, depending upon availability and individual preference.
You are required to do atleast 1 CEX and 1 CBD in pain medicine. You are not required to do any DOPS during your module, however if you do get a chance to do any DOPS then get them done. It would be particularly useful if you wish to pursue a career in Pain Medicine.
You are expected to maintain a logbook of procedures observed in theatres and type of cases seen in the pain clinic. This logbook should be presented at the end of module meeting with Dr Ahmed.
You are encouraged to be as pro-active as possible in arranging your extra sessions well in advance. As long as you have managed to sort out an activity and informed the anaesthetic secretary you will not be rostered to do any other activity. This module is protected and only if there are no suitable activities in pain medicine available you will be put down to do an anaesthetic list.
Provided you have attended the required number of sessions you will be signed off for your pain medicine module.
