Text:Duck! Rabbit!
by Amy Rosenthal & Tom Lichtenheld
Focus chunk/portion for close read:
Whole Text / Steps
1. FIRST READ (Reading for the “Gist”)
Materials: Duck! Rabbit! Book, Chart paper to collect questions
• Target: We will ask and answer questions before, during and after closely reading a text. (K.RL.1)
• Teacher reads aloud text to students who use active listening skills. Show cover and read title. Gather questions before, during and after 1st reading.
•Ask the Text Dependent Questions again. Value the struggle knowing you will be reading the text two more times.
2. SECOND READ (Key Details)
Materials: Duck! Rabbit! Book, chart of questions, highlighter tape, T-chart
•Target: We will describe the character(s) in the story by using key details from the text. (K.RL.3)
•Re-read the middle of the story to the students (bill, ears, bread, carrot, quack, sniff).
Use highlighting tape to underline the key details about the main character.
• Create a T-chart (or use graphic organizer) to collect text-based evidence.
3. THIRD READ (Integration of Knowledge and Ideas)
Materials: Duck! Rabbit! Book, chart of questions, completed T-chart, chart paper for modeled writing
•Re-read the story to students
•Target: We will identify the main character in the story based on evidence from the text. (K.RL.3)
• Students will participate in structured oral practice and sentence writing using the possible frames:
“I think it is a ______because the text said it ______”
• Class VOTE.
*From the results of the vote, you can extend to a modeled writing lesson, where you use the results to write an opinion paper (K.W.1), which says the title of the book and states the student’s opinion.
Text-Dependent Question(s)
Select 2-3 high cognitive level questions that will require students to use the author’s words. Prompt to use text evidence. (These can
correspond to the three steps in the lesson.)
1.What is the main idea of the story? (What is this story about?)
2.What are the key details that describe the character(s) in the text? Find the details in the text.
3.Who is the main character of the story? Cite details from the text to support your answer/opinion.
