June 19 Installation of Club Officers for 2013-2014!

President Pete’s Rotary Moment: Pete just got an e-mail from PDG (Past District Governor) Klaus Hachfeld announcing that all the funding for the Kosovo medical project we contributed to last November is finally in hand. To get some background on this important story, you can (and should – it’s pretty awesome) read about it at: http://www.rotary.org/en/mediaandnews/therotarian/pages/balkanstoboston.aspx

Rotary fellowship over olives and moussaka: An evening for dining out is coming our way at the Athenian Greek Restaurant in Lowell, May 2. Get on your appetites and let Nat know.

Appreciating our Sponsors: We’ll be hosting a Sponsor Appreciation Cocktail Party at the Doubletree Hotel in the Concord Room on May 2. Cash bar. And LOTS of appreciation to the businesses and good folks who support what we do in our community and for our community.

Rotary Happenings around the world:

Rotary Happenings in our backyard:

·  The Rotary Club of Concord has an on-line auction going. Bidding is open from March 25-April 10. Check it out and support our neighbors at biddingforgood.com/concordmarotary

·

Again in Concord: We have two tables reserved for the Concord Pops evening on April 12. If you’re interested in attending, tell Bob Cassidy.
·

·  The Rotary Club of Billerica invites you to enjoy a Dinner Show with “Joey Voices” on April 27th . Dinner starts at 7:00 PM with a cost of $35/person. If you would like to attend for a great evening of dining and entertainment contact a member of the Billerica club (e.g., John Peterson is a Bedford resident and a member of the Billerica Rotary Club).

Club Banners: Both Debi Malone and Patsy Lloyd brought club banners to add to our banner display:

Program: Kevin is the go-to man for the ESSEX (Eastern States Student Exchange) and RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) and today he spoke to both of those programs.

Regarding student exchanges, he pointed out that a terrific exchange to make better known to possible candidates is the Short-Term Exchange. This is for students aged 15-18 ½ years and involves what amounts to a trade between two families: each family sends a student to the other family. This is generally done sequentially, so the students will be enjoying the exchange experience with each other. It is the simplest of the ESSEX exchanges and does not require extensive background checks – only the families involve need to be vetted. It does not involve club financial support. For more information, go to:

http://essexpa.clubwizard.com/EPShortTermExchangeProgram.cfm?print=n

Regarding RYLA, Kevin built the case for why many volunteers are needed to make this year’s RYLA run effectively. Bedford’s engagement with RYLA has grown over the years, from a time when we were fielding two candidates by invitation to now, when there is a very competitive process in which high school sophomores compete for a limited number of spots. The RYLA weekend in June is all about individual personal growth, team work and leadership skills.

What became clear as Kevin spoke was that the long list of tasks both before the weekend and during the weekend involves a small army. Tasks include processing roommate selections, training facilitators,

keeping track of participants during the weekend, chaperoning on night-time duty, observing, determining the makeup of each 6-student group during the weekend, and more. Kevin will get a list of specific tasks for those interested in signing up.

Speaking of Exchange students….

This year’s and last year’s students got together on the occasion of Kimmo’s visit to the US this month. Kimmo Kauppinen, Stephane Todeschini and Jaime Craven were all treated to a dinner at Bertucci’s by the Chris and Kelly Craven. Chris noted that they represent ¾ of the recent Bedford exchange students!

Raffles and Happy Dollars: Terry won the door prize and Diane tried for the King of Hearts but came up with the deuce. Still in there, folks.

In Happy Dollars, Jacquelin was happy for a wonderful and successful fundraiser last Saturday night; Kevin was happy to be here just because; Maureen was glad for spending the morning with her grandchild; Ralph was super glad the Red Sox beat the Yankees and he gave thanks twice for that; Bob Mead was happy to be here; Joe was happy for his sister’s birthday today…and for his older sister’s birthday yesterday; Jim was happy for spring and for Debi’s being there to bring the happy dollar bucket around; Nat was happy to be here; Pete was glad Patsy was back to share the Basingstoke Club Banner and glad for the Lakeland, Florida banner Debi brought back; Andy had a wishing dollar – for warmer weather; Britton was super glad that Debi was doing Happy Dollars, particularly because she’s his mentee; Linda put in 50 cents for a great weekend on the North Shore and 50 cents for not having an evening snack since last week; Diana was happy for her 20th wedding anniversary; Patsy was happy to be here and that she has only six more weeks of physical therapy; Susanna asserted that she missed everybody terribly while being away Down Under; Bob C. was glad to see Susanna back so that she can do the bulletin again; Devon was thrilled that her husband has just finished work to get his degree in Exercise Science; Terry was happy and proud that his oldest daughter has not only been accepted to Howard University but has been offered a full scholarship; Debi was glad to know she was missed so quickly while she was away.

There’s more…….see the next pages for information on the District Conference!
