Disability Action Plan for the

Hobsons Bay City Council

2008 to 2012

1.  The community will be accessible

-  Nearly all the paths in the community will be safe and easy to use. This includes paths in parks.

-  Car parking will be in the right place. There will be safe and easy to use paths around the car parks

-  New buildings and changes to all buildings will follow the law, called the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.

-  Some new houses for people with a disability will be accessible. The Council will help developers and builders with this.

-  The Council will tell people that transport must be accessible, reliable and cheap.

2.  The community will get information they can understand.

The Council will:

-  Have information in different ways, for example, easy English, large print and audio

-  Have more easy to read signs in the community

-  Give people with a disability information they can understand

-  Have a way for people with a disability to ask for information or talk to the Council

3.  The Hobsons Bay community will be fair for everyone

The council will:

-  Make direct support services better for people with a disability, their families and carers

-  Help their sports and social clubs to include people with a disability

-  Have libraries that are more accessible, for example, ramps, toilets, computers and accessible information

-  Tell people that there should be good health services and support for people in Hobsons Bay

-  Tell people that people with a disability should have the chance to learn

-  Make sure that all Council departments give good services to people with a disability

4.  The community will include people with a disability

The Council will:

-  Help people with a disability to join in with fun, social and cultural activities

-  Employ people with a disability. Ask local businesses to employ people with a disability

-  Tell local business to give the same service to all people in the community

-  Ask all people to volunteer

-  Ask people with a disability to be leaders in the community

-  Give the community good stories and pictures about people with a disability
