NewAn Introduction to Providing Advice on

Higher Education and Higher Apprenticeships

A series of regional two-day events which combine information with practical guidance skills

Thursday 23 – Friday 24 May 2013 (Birmingham)

Overview

Many different staff are providing information and advice on higher education and apprenticeship opportunities in sixth forms and colleges. For people new to this area of work the sheer volume of information and range of opportunities can be daunting. Similarly the expectations of students for appropriate, unbiased, comprehensive, timely and above all well informed support, adds to the pressure.

These two-day events are primarily aimed at those who are new to this work. The programme has been thoughtfully designed by advisers who are experts in the field, to provide you with a baseline of knowledge and practical skills which will help them to make a confident start in this important area of career development.

Throughout Day 1 you will learn all the key information you need to start to advise students interested in higher education and higher apprenticeships. The plenary sessions will signpost you to lots of reference material and the workshops have been carefully chosen to provide you with in-depth knowledge of some critical issues, including what private universities have to offer; the best websites to refer students to and applying to Oxbridge. Identifying the most informative and best value resources is always challenging so at all the breaks and over the lunch period, Prospects Resources will provide an exhibition.

Day 2 will cover graduate LMI – what graduates do? However most of the day will focus on career guidance practice. We will take you through two models of career guidance which work well with potential HE students and help you develop some essential interview techniques including contracting, use of open questions, action planning, summarising and listening skills – with lots of opportunity to practice.
