Directions for CVC Word List

On the other side, you will find a list of CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words for you to practice with your child. Here are a few suggestions:

1.Make flashcards of the words and see how many your child can sound out in one minute. This activity is similar to the NWF (Nonsense Word Fluency) test on the DIBELS screening.

2.Choose about 6 words and see if your child can “chop” each word and write the sounds that they hear. Chopping is when we say each sound in the word. For example, if we chopped cab, we would say /c/ /a/ /b/. This activity is similar to the PSF (Phoneme Segmentation Fluency) test on the DIBELS screening.

3.Choose one word and ask your child to say as many rhyming words as he/she can. Nonsense words are okay to use.

4.Use the flashcards to find words in the same word family. For example, at, bat, cat, fat, hat, mat, pat, rat, sat, vat are all in the –at word family.

5.Say a word and have your child tell you the beginning, middle, or ending sound.

6.Say a word and have your child use it in a sentence. This activity is similar to the WUF (Word Usage Fluency) test on the DIBELS screening.
