Florida A&M University Police Reserve Program

Florida A&M University Police Reserves are people from the community who volunteer their time working as Reserve Police Officers. Most Reserve Officers have full time jobs, own small businesses, are students, or are in the military.

Reserve Officers have full police officer powers while on-duty. Our Reserve Officers supplement the patrol division as a solo or second officer in the field. Most Reserve Officers work patrol, learning the same techniques and skills as full time officers. Reserve Officers also work special events; such as, Homecoming, sporting events, parades, community events, mutual aid, investigations, and crime scene preservation.

The Florida A&M University Police Department is always looking for talented men and women who have a desire to serve the University community to join our Reserve Police Officer program. As a Florida A&M University Police Reserve Officer, you will learn the basics of Law Enforcement from the ground up. Every day will offer new learning experiences as you develop and sharpen the skills necessary to be an effective member of our patrol division.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must meet the requirements of Chapter 943, Florida Statues*, and have one
(1) year of law enforcement experience. Two years (2) of military or other appropriate experience may substitute for the required one year law enforcement experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational technical training may substitute at the rate of 30 semester, 45 quarter or
720 classroom hours for each year of the required experience.In addition
to basic qualifications, applicant must possess law enforcement certification from the State of Florida.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have:

  • Knowledge of law enforcement principles and techniques, criminal justice, crime prevention and control and arrest procedures
  • Knowledge of the university policies, rules and regulations (to include student codes), current statutes, law updates, standard operating procedures and/or departmental general orders
  • Skilled in using restraining devices
  • Skilled in the ability to qualify annually on firearms
  • Knowledge of crime prevention and control procedures
  • Skilled and ability to safely operate a motor vehicle, in emergency and non-emergency situations
  • Ability to work in dangerous and stressful situations
  • Ability to understand and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing
  • Ability to follow oral and written directives

The FAMU Department of Campus Safety and Security accepts reserve law enforcement applications year-round.
