MVCA PRESIDENTS REPORT

2008/2009

I am pleased to submit my 10th consecutive Annual report as President of the Macleay Valley Cricket Association.

It is satisfying to report that the association’s Vice President, Dean Rutledge and Secretary, Dave Hill have also completed 10 consecutive years in their positions and both have been a great support to me over the last decade. The other two members of the executive have also served the association for long periods. Anthony Henry has been an executive member for 8 years and Tina Terlich for 4 years.

This stability in executive committee positions has enabled the Association to maintain its operation in a very efficient manner with little controversy. All executive members have one goal and that is to promote and advance cricket on the Macleay. I thank you all for your commitment on behalf of myself and all of the Clubs and players in our association.

The Junior sub-committee comprising Troy McKiernan, Junior Co-ordinator, Shannon McKiernan Secretary, and Maryanne Taylor, Recorder, were responsible for organising successful competitions for our Under 10’s, 12’s and 14’s players. I would like to thank each of them for their contribution to junior cricket during the year.

In the domestic junior competition, my congratulations to the Premiers;

Rovers (MVVS) Cricket Club Under 12’s

Rovers (O & D) Cricket Club Under 14’s

At Junior Inter-district level the Under 12’s and Under 14’s were runners-up which was a great effort considering the strength of the Hastings and Manning competitions.

Greg Taylor has also been a major supporter of junior cricket for many years. I am sure his influence at MNCJCC, where he is Secretary, has been responsible for the many Macleay players being selected for representative cricket at higher levels.

My congratulations to the following players who were selected for higher representative honours;

Bradman’s Cup squad - Callum Taylor

MNCJCC Under 12’s - Keegan Peel, Stuart Mason, Daniel Baker, Callen McKiernan

MNCJCC Under 13’s - Nathan Prowse

MNCJCC Under 14’s - Jonathon Brown, Nick Millar, Chris Walker

MNCJCC Under 15’s - Braydon Peel, Troy Ward

I would like to acknowledge my appreciation to everyone involved with junior cricket including the coaches, managers and parents who supported the junior competitions both at local and Inter-district level.

The ‘In 2 cricket’ coaching program for kids under eight was conducted in Kempsey by Steve Tarbox and Nick Ptolemy. I would particularly like to thank them both as this introductory program is an important Cricket Australia initiative for entry level participants to the game of cricket.

The Department of Sport and Recreation organised junior coaching clinics in Kempsey during October and January run by John Brenton, the Regional Director of Coaching. This coaching program was very successful and hopefully many of the skills gained will be seen in future junior cricket competitions. I would like to thank to John, his assistant coaches, and to all the children who participated in the programs.

The MVCA is very fortunate to have Troy McKiernan and Matt Baker selected to undertake the Cricket NSW Level 2 Cricket Coaching course. They have both commenced the course and on completion I anticipate that their coaching skills will further enhance all levels of cricket on the Macleay.

The senior competition was enhanced by the return of the Stuarts Point and Frederickton Cricket Clubs after absences of more than ten years. Both clubs performed very well in their first season with Stuarts Point being runners-up in First and Second grades.

All matches were closely fought after Christmas when the competition reverted to three grades.

Once again the three weeks of finals produced great cricket however only one team was able to win a Major Premiership after ending the season as Minor Premiers, this being Kempsey Heights 2st X1.

I would like to congratulate the Major Premiers;

United All Blacks Cricket Club 1st Grade

Kempsey Heights Cricket Club 2nd Grade

Nulla (Baldwin) Cricket Club 3rd Grade

Well done to the Nulla Cricket Club for winning the Club Championship Trophy. I think this is a great testimony to their junior cricket programs and the continual promotion of these cricketers into their senior grades.

At Inter-district level, we performed extremely well finishing Minor premiers in the Under 19’s and Over 35’s; however we could not convert the home ground advantage to premierships. Michael Judd was awarded the MNCCC inter-district player of the year whish was a just reward for his performances during the competition.

We were more successful in the SCG Cup competition where we were unbeaten, but due to a wash out against a higher ranked opponent in Round 4 we were unable to reach the quarter finals.

There were four players who were selected for higher development teams or camps, these were;

Scott Ritchie – Lord Taverners Aboriginal Cricket Development camp

Kyle Masters – North Coast Zone under 21’s Colts team

Craig Rogan – North Coast Bush Turkeys under 19’s tour to New Zealand

Marty Nicholls - North Coast Bush Turkeys under 19’s tour to New Zealand

On behalf of the executive, thanks to all the players both senior and junior for their involvement in cricket on the Macleay and to those who made themselves available to represent the MVCA at representative level.

On behalf of all players I would like thank Neil Heuston for preparing the Kempsey Golf Club pitch, TJ Smith and Gus Kelly for the South Kempsey pitch, and Peter Atterton and the South West Rocks Cricket Club for preparing their home pitch. I think all MVCA pitches are as good if not better than other pitches in the Council.

The Annual Presidents Award was presented to TJ Smith for his valuable contribution to indigenous cricket on the Macleay through his role as Captain and batsman with the United All Blacks Cricket Club. He is in my opinion the number one player in our representative teams and this season with his father has been the curator the South Kempsey pitch.

The Executive would not be fully effective without the interest and input of club delegates at the senior and junior monthly management meetings, and accordingly I thank everyone for your valued contributions.

To Colin Mayhew, President of the Macleay Valley Cricket Umpires & Scorers Association, and his fellow umpires I would like to thank you all on behalf of the Association for your continued support officiating in local junior, senior and inter-district matches

To all the staff at the Macleay Argus, thanks for your continued support of cricket on the Macleay.

I would also like to again thank Dave Hill for his weekly coverage of cricket results on radio Tank FM and John Russell and Richard Blight for their continued media support during the last 12 months.

It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge and thank the generous support of the Macleay Valley Cricket Association by our sponsors.
