Ms. Stewart – 6th grade Science and Pre AP Science

Classroom Expectations and Procedures

Respect and consideration for others are the most important guidelines for my classroom!

Be courteous ~ Speak at appropriate times in appropriate ways.

Be respectful ~ Avoid conduct that interferes with teaching and learning.

Be prepared ~ Have all supplies, completed assignments and a library book for each class.

Be prompt ~ Be seated and ready to work when the bell rings.

Be attentive ~ Follow directions the first time they are given.

Consequences ~ Repetitive misbehavior will result in after school detention or office referrals.

Grading and Assignments ~ Six weeks’ averages are based upon the following BISD policy:

50% daily grades (daily assignments)

50% major grades (tests and projects)

Failing test grades can be retested for a grade up to a 70. The student will need to come in for tutorials or complete assigned reteaching activities before being allowed to retest. Weekly assignments are posted on Monday and the students are expected to record these in their folders. Assignments will also be posted on my web page, for parents’ convenience and additional information.

Tutorials ~ Tutorials are offered Monday through Thursday after school until 4:15. Students need to bring with them the materials on which they need assistance. No appointment is necessary for afternoon tutorials.

Skyward ~ Student grades may be accessed via Skyward, our online grade book. Contact the office to obtain parent login information. Students are provided personal logins as well. Please check your progress often.

Classroom Procedures

1) Come into class quietly and be seated. Sharpen pencils and have all materials you need before the tardy bell rings. No food, candy or gum is allowed in class. You may bring a water bottle to class if needed.

2) Take care of drinks, restroom, and getting necessary supplies from your locker during passing period. You will not be allowed to leave the classroom after the bell unless you use your punch card.

3) Bring the following supplies to class each day: science folder, notebook paper, pencils, red checking pen, assignments, and a library book. All work must be done in pencil. Every student should have pencils in class every day. We keep all assignments in the folder for the entire six weeks. DO NOT THROW PAPERS AWAY. This is very important. At the end of the six weeks, you will organize your folder and turn it in for a major grade.

4) If you are absent, take care of your make-up work promptly. Check your folder or the board for missed assignments. Check the daily “Make-Up Papers” file folders in the classroom to see if there are any papers you need. According to BISD policy, you have one day for each day you were absent, to complete your make-up work. Ask questions if you need help. Turn in your completed assignment in the black “Make Up” tray below the class period trays. If you are absent on the day of a lab or test, you will need to make arrangements to stay after school to make up the missed work.

5) If you are tardy, you must have a pass from the tardy table. Students are considered tardy if they are not in class when the bell rings. Check your student handbook for the school tardy policy.

6) Always do your best work. Complete your assignments. Since 50% of your six weeks grade is based on daily work, your grade drops every time you miss an assignment. Daily work is usually due at the beginning of class the following day. Have your assignment ready to turn in when the bell rings. Late work is not accepted. You must have your work with you in class. Your work is late if ….

Þ You left it in your locker.

Þ You left it at home.

Þ You are still working on your assignment when I take them up.

Þ You cannot find it when I call for it.

Extra credit work is not given to raise grades or replace missing assignments. Rather than “extra” credit, please earn credit for the work you have already been assigned.

7) If you finish your work early, read from your library book, unless I have given you another task.

8) At the end of class, wait for me to dismiss you. Push in your chair and leave quietly, taking all personal belongings with you. Do not leave used tissues, old papers, broken pencils, or other trash in the desk or on the floor. Leaving the area clean shows respect for the students in the next class.

9) Do not write, pass or read social notes in class. Texting is the same as writing and passing social notes. Electronic devices are for educational use only, and are only to be used with teacher permission. Cell phones are to be turned off during the school day, not simply on a silent setting.

10) Be a good group member. When we do group activities or labs, do your share of the work and do it well. Accept that everyone is different and be open to all ideas. Do your best to show respect and get along with others in the group.
