THE SONNY WALTON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

$150.00

Sonny Walton began his life in Gordon Nebraska in 1929. Sonny was born into a very poor family and was helping contribute to the family income at a very early age. At age six he rented a wagon for one dollar and drove around the countryside picking up bones, iron or pop bottles to sell. He was always working or trying to help support his family. At age 8 he went to work on a ranch 9 miles from town. He walked or hitch hiked to work on weekends and then back to town for school on Monday. Finally he ended up living at the ranch and going to country school. He finished the eighth grade and had to go to work full time. He wasn’t given the opportunity to finish his education, however, he was always learning and driven to make something of himself. He read constantly and strived to better himself. He admired educated people and made sure his children and grandchildren were given the opportunity to get a good education. He was very proud of his family and had strong family values. He was a very accepting person who loved children and animals. His entire life was based on ranching and agriculture.
