The meetings with Juvenile Justice do not, so the numbers may be off . State Director Tony Troop is pleased with our numbers in Duplin County.
Mrs. Edie Barfield went over the Dental Data Report from Bonnie for Duplin county
Wendy & Belinda - Introduced the Healthy Vendors Presentation
They are looking at making available better choices for staff & students.
through a lot of research Belinda did find a company that would serve us.
Canteen made a presentation concerning Healthy Vending:
Healthy Vending Solutions by Ingrid Smith
They gave a presentation to the DAISY Committee based upon our priorities.
what is most important
1 - Healthy choices
2. Commissions for schools
3. Professional and prompt customer service
4. Quality name brands
5. Variety/Lowered Price so children can not afford this
Compliance with the new USDA rules a must. This must also apply to what will be in the vending machines.
Machine can be specialized by needs of the schools.
Commision is obvious concern for schools.
Mentioned that the principals have made deals with Coke and Pepsi and that even some schools owned their own machine and it would not be a problem to switch over and eventually all machines on campus with have to be in compliance with the USDA. They do monitor what is placed in the machines. Teachers will have a choice but the machines that have student access will have healthy choices. Standard pricing gives 5 to 10% commission but if the schools needed to bring the prices down they would be able to do that but it would knock off the commission. Suggested that we have vending machine where students have access for times when they are staying after school.
Edie thanked them for coming and expressed that we had no power but it would be discussed. They noted samples could be provided. The committee discussed that:
1. We will need to advertise this ad get the word out.
2. This be an individual school decision but Dr. Thigpen said that we could endorse it and recommend it but it would be up to each individual school.
3. Belinda said that some schools received profit and some did not and they could consider this.
4. As a DAISY committee we decided that we do we want to endorse it. Dr. Thigpen suggested a presentation before the BOE. Edie stated she thought we should endorse it so that we would be more uniform througout the county. Dr. Ben Thigpen made a motion that we endorse Canteen as Duplin County Healthy vending machine supplier. Motion was made and seconded and passed.
Our Next Daisy Meeting will be Sept. 9, 2014 @ 12 in the Boardroom
