CLASS TITLE:PARALEGAL SPECIALIST

This is work performing paralegal services for state agencies.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

  • Takes affidavits from victims and witnesses of incidents under review.
  • Conducts initial interviews of clients seeking legal aid.
  • Performs legal research for attorneys, subject to supervision.
  • Coordinates inter-agency and intra-agency legal functions.
  • Maintains case files, court calendars, and litigation timetables.
  • Performs notary functions.
  • Prepares case summaries, pleadings, orders, and summons under the supervision of an attorney.
  • Directs activities of clerical personnel.
  • Attends hearings to assist counsel.
  • Drafts pleadings, motions and memoranda for attorneys.
  • Participates at informal proceedings where membership in the bar is not required.
  • Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of a training program to become a legal assistant, a paralegal, a legal paraprofessional or a lawyer's or attorney's assistant; or
  • A degree or certificate in legal technology, legal administration, legal studies or allied legal services; or
  • Graduation from a school of law; or
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in allied legal services; or
  • Four years of experience involving paralegal work; or
  • Four years of experience in legal secretarial work.
