Anticipated Classroom Format: Students will engage in various learning activities daily. Lecture, simulations, textbook and outside readings, and practice problems will all be utilized in an effort to prepare the student to be successful on the Advanced Placement test and in mastering the concepts covered in class. ATTENDANCE PLAYS A CRUCIAL ROLE IN THE SUCCESS IN THIS CLASS AND IS EXPECTED TO BE REGULAR.

Assessment/Evaluations/Required Student Products: The typical assessment will consists of unit exams modeled after the AP exam, quizzes, homework assignments, and practice with released exam questions. Students will also be required to keep and maintain a notebook which will be filled with teacher made handouts and lecture notes.

Grading Plan:

Daily Performance Grades: 30%

Includes quizzes (can be on assigned readings), daily assignments, and in-class simulations

Evaluation Grades: 50%

Unit exams are modeled using the AP exam, which may include past test questions. There are only five units, thus five exams. Therefore, these will dramatically impact your grade.

End of Course Test: 20%

This is the state mandated test. We cover MUCH more than what is on this test.

Please note that 70% of your grade is based on exams and plan accordingly.

Strategies for Student Learning: Students will engage in a variety of activities each day. As the class period consists of ninety minutes, students can expect a typical day will contain three activities utilizing lecture, simulations, discussions, practice problems, group activities, and reading. The most important strategy for learning is being present in the classroom! Bring your text every day.

Academic Honesty: Honesty is the cornerstone of any relationship and is expected of all students. Any dishonest act will be dealt with in accordance to Board policy located in the student handbook.

Required Readings:

-Ray, M. and Anderson, D. Krugman’s Economics for AP*- required to bring to class every day; assigned book

-Mankiw, N. Gregory. Principles of Economics, Third Edition- stored in classroom

Lost Book Policy: Board Policy Descriptive Code: IFAD The student will be charged full replacement cost for any textbook lost, regardless of condition.

The amount to be charged for a textbook damaged by a student will be the responsibility of the principal.

Outside Readings: I have two books I recommend for reading in this class. These books are offered as an incentive (bonus econ term use!) to improve your grade. Only one book can be read for credit. Students can schedule a morning appointment for an oral exam on one of the books. Exam opportunities will end on December 16th. The books are-

Freakanomics- by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner. *** Please be advised this book is “R” rated.

The Fair Tax Book- by Neal Boortz

Classroom Procedures:

Agendas: It is the responsibility of the student to record the daily agenda. This can be used to inform students of important due dates, readings, and any other information. If you are absent, please get the daily agenda before you ask for your make-up work.

Restroom: You will be given three bathroom passes to use at your discretion. Please use them wisely. No passes will be issued to retrieve missing/ forgotten materials.

Tardy to Class: Every tardy to class will result in a detention. You will have three days to serve the detention. After that opportunity expires you will be written up. Detentions are Monday- Friday at 8:00 am or Thursday at 3:40pm.

Issues (disruptions, materials, consequences): It is my desire to limit classroom disruptions, especially those caused by students in the course. Please know you are responsible for your behavior and your materials. Infractions result in detentions.

Absence Procedures: If you are absent from class it is up to YOU to retrieve the missing materials before or after school. Please do not interrupt class time for this. Work may only be made up IF the absence is excused and the required paperwork is submitted (the “yellow slip”). You have the number of days you were out to make up missed work. If you miss an exam (NOT GOOD!) you will need to make it up the very next school day. Of course, the exam will be different. If the work, including exams, is not made up within the allotted time frame a grade of zero will be issued. *please realize it may be difficult to guarantee you an entire 90 minutes for a make-up exam.

If possible, I appreciate advance notice of absences.
