Growing up, my older brother and I loved playing computer games with each other. We spent hours in front of the screen, killing zombies, saving kidnapped princesses, and ultimately becoming super heroes. My childhood love for games continued on into my adolescence, in which I was introduced to a new kind of gaming. I played a game called Assassin’s Creed 2, about a hero who lived in Italy during the Renaissance. The game was set around many characters and events that actually took place in history, and that was what made the story of the game very interesting and meaningful.
Characters such as the great artists of the High Renaissance Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci et al.
I was impressed by the game's ability to bring history into gaming because of my love for learning about historical conflicts and my desire to raise awareness about them. These interests in gaming and history led me to aspire to make my own historical fiction game. I thought of all the possible areas and time periods I could set my games in: Palestine in the present-day, the Dominican Republic during the dictatorship of Trujillo, or even the Americas during Spanish interaction with the Native Americans. I imagine this to be a great opportunity for young gamers to learn more about what has shaped our world today, while still being able to enjoy their epic experiences with the fictional characters within the game. This is why I want to study in the fields of computer engineering and integrated digital media, both of which are majors offered at New York University.
I think that “games” are used in all sorts of places, including in governments. War games etc are a way of simulating war situations, and trying to gauge the “least worst” strategy for getting involved.
With interests in using computer simulations of events in the form of games, computer programming, and history in mind, I would like to combine them under the auspices of New York University’s School of Engineering.
With these interests at heart, I am applying to NYU’s Tandon School of Engineering. The school provides the very environment I wish to learn from for my professional career. The encouragement for students to become innovators and entrepreneurs is a part of the coursework at NYU, and would be the driving force for my achievements as an engineering student. In addition, the Gallatin School of Individualized Study appeals to me as a unique approach to pursue my passions, as I would receive the specific help I need to combine my interests in software technology and history, while also learning rhetorical teaching strategies to further my ability in impacting young minds. Both these schools provide excellent opportunities for prospective engineering students, and therefore appeal to me as those that I would like to attend.
